Will_Tech
Hello All Bit of a strange question here but does anyone have a very ruff idea of how much it would cost to remove an asbestos safety curtain and its counterweights and rigging. The curtain itself measures 5x7m. I know you cannot really estimate this but any ideas of how much it would cost would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Will :)
emsgeorge
Lots of money. Seriously, asbestos removal companies charge through the roof - after all, who else is going to come and do it. You are in a bit of a 'closed market' with them, as its not anyone who has the kit or expertise to do it. Ive seen a number of quotes for removal of a safety curtain (just the asbestos inside it, so the metalworkers could remove the actual curtain), and each and every quote was over 20k. (althoug the curtain was about twice the size of yours). It tends to be cheaper if they can get it out in one piece - less time on site masking everything up, and cleaning the air etc. If they can do it at their 'dirty' area, at their leisure, the charges are lower. All depends if you can get it out of the building in one piece though. (go and measure those dock doors !). And they quoted at least a week for the air filtering kit to be on as well, which means no shows, no maintenance, nobody allowed without a noddy suit into the stage at all. flypig
As Emsgeorge says. "Lots of money" as asbestos is incredibly dangerous stuff. Purifying the air after the removal is probably the most important aspect. And Will, please learn to spell or find a dictionary. a 'ruff' is a lacy decorative collar. The word you needed was 'rough'. WiLL
asbestos is incredibly dangerous stuff. Well, actually, long term exposure to asbestos particles in the air is dangerous. Asbestos itself isn't dangerous. Most cases of throat and lung cancer linked to asbestos were workers in asbestos manufacture and/or installation and thus exposed daily to large amounts. Government legislation towards treatment of asbestos is cautious in the extreme. But it is however, the law. Any attempt to remove it yourself would be illegal. Andrew C
Well, actually, long term exposure to asbestos particles in the air is dangerous.No. ONE fibre lodged in your lungs can kill you, slowly and painfully. It is just the likelihood that this one fibre will get into the lung in the first place that changes with long term exposure.
kitlane
Why does it need removing? Is it in poor condition and shedding asbestos into the atmosphere? Is it going to be replaced by something else? If it isn't going to be replaced and is in reasonable condition it might be easier and a lot cheaper to either just leave it there or have it encapsulated.
