Darkness
Hi all, We are currently planning do to a pantomime type show. We have a genies lamp, we are currently thinking of just flashing a light and running some smoke through some ducting as its easy to do and we are on quite a tight budget for effects. I was wondering how people have done a genies lamp before in the past and any other ways of doing it. We also have a wizard and a witch which we are considering using a theatrical flash pyro, again what other ways have people done this. Thanks
Andrew Edwards
For Aladdin's lamp: There are a number of pyrotechnic smoke devices, but the one to probably go for is generally known as 'Aladdin Smoke'. I think the name speaks for itself. There are also portable ignition devices available so that you do not need to run wires to the lamp from off stage. Talk to your local hire company. Your idea is probably cheaper but if you need the lamp to be held then 'Aladdin' would have his movement limited and you may run the risk of the ducting being exposed and spoiling the effect. Magical entrances: If you want to do a theatrical flash without pyros then you can do it with lighting, a fogger and some sort of bang sound effect. With the right timing it can work just as well and is of course much safer...and you do not get the smell! HTH Drew.
kitlane
Years ago we did this with plumbers smoke matches, a piece of nichrome wire, a small 12V battery and a switch. A bit fiddly and not 100% reliable but pretty good.

The Genie from the lamp thing has been discussed here aswell to it may be worth a look.
