Ike
As of next week I start a new job that will require a lot of hauling. I currently use a 13mm kernmantle rope and a Petzl Fixe and occasionally also also use an ascender to give the guy/girl on the ground a break. Now somewhere I remember seeing a device that features a cam mechanism that doesn't completely lock off but takes quite a bit of the weight when holding or lowering, the problem being I can't for the life of me remember where I saw it or what it was called. I think it was from a chandlers but can't be sure and without knowing more searching isn't easy. :D Anyone know what it's called and where I can get one? I'd also be interested to hear any personal experience of their use. Thanks,Ike
Ben Langfeld
In the climbing world, what you describe would be called a GriGri. See the Petzl GriGri Product Page.
Ike
What I'm looking for is something that doesn't fully lock, that doesn't require you to pull the handle to lower the load. And GriGris only work on rope up to 11mm. Nice thought though.

Seano
Petzl Gri-Gri and I'D are both terrible ideas, sorry guys, you're wrong. One is a specialised belay device that doubles as a descender, the other is a specialised descender that doubles (badly) as a belay device. Both can be used in improvised hauling systems, mainly in a rescue situation, but neither is remotely efficient in that role and you'd be daft to use them that way routinely. The nearest Petzl product to what you describe is the Pro-traxion - but that does lock off completely, its a kind of pulley/ascender hybrid. I've posted something on this before.* Hang on <rummages through search function>.Yep: clicky Other than to say that this is what I believe you're looking for, I wont repeat here what I said there. But I will add that a product spookily similar to the Cmi pulley (non-locking, but a nice big swing-cheek 'rescue' pulley) is now offered within the EU by 'Kong' of Italy. hthSeanx *Ooh, look at that, it was my first post here. We've come full circle, I think I can get off now. :D
Ike
Excellent! Thanks Sean! :D EDIT: Just placed an order for a Harken Hexaratchet 1549 and narrowly avoided the temptation to spend an absolute fortune on other bits and pieces so will let you know how it goes.
