The Stage & Accounting

Hi All,

upon my travels through my bank statements today, a thought did occur. Can you off-set your subscription to the stage as a business expense? particularly if your a freelancer, I think you probably can, the only reason I subscribe to the stage is to look for possible employment oppourtunities, therefore it is a business expense, but I don't know if the HMRC would take it, and I'm not certified accountant (yet). does anyone have any real world experience with this?

I'm sure that if (and only if) you are a freelancer then the Stage can be counted as a legitimate business expense. I see no way that anyone other than a freelancer can use this though as employees can't to my knowledge offset stuff - or can they?

The stage, SOS, quite a few other specialist mag subscriptions, radio licences, business credit card subscrpitions, bectu, equity etc etc.

The only thing I ever have problems with is clothing. It now seems that anything other than safety clothing doesn't count

I did a half holiday/half video shoot last year - so thought I'd try to claim that. The accountant, while saying that it was quite fair did point out that I'd have a hell of a time justifying it to the tax man, so that went!
