Ike
I've been building more and more custom equipment recently and would really like to get hold of a few metal punches to fit various d-sub connectors and possibly XLR's, cable glands etc. I'm looking for the types with two halves that bolt together through a small hole in the centre of where you want the finished hole to be. So far I've managed to get a few from a radio rally that were, from what I can tell, designed to fit valve bases but I'm struggling to find a source of new ones. I'm based in Manchester but am happy to use mail order. Oh and I have been watching ebay for a while with a few different search terms but all I can find is circular ones. Thanks, Ike
lightsource
RS Components (http://rswww.com) do the D punches, 9 way to 25 way, but be warned, the prices are between £100 - £200 :D For XLR's etc, I just use conical drill bits, and good quality standard HSS bits on a drill press
Ike
Thanks for that, I was sure I had checked RS :D Anyway having seen the price does anyone know if anyone hires them out or anywhere I could take a case and have them cut out for me? From RS I'd be looking at having to buy three different sizes and I dont think I would honestly get £350 use out of them.
3guk
XLR wise, http://www.lawson-his.co.uk/scripts/produc...=Hole%20Cutters I have ordered from these guys before and tbh pretty good service and prices that don't break the bank !!!
lightsource
What about the pre-punched plates available from companies such as Penn Fabrication, these are small individually punched panels that connect together to form a 19" panel
paulears
the Canford punches (this is a link to the 24mm XLR version) are not too expensive at 8.95 each.
peternewman
CPC also do a range (here) although annoyingly it seems they don't do the 24mm version, only the 25 and 22.5 either side.
paulears
1mm isn't much but from experience, a 25mm hole is useless for the D size 24mm sockets - the damn mounting holes brak through! extremely annoying!
Andrew C
If you do buy them, get yourself the ball-race to go with them. It saves so much effort!
robloxley
As well as Q-max punches, have a look for Greenlee sheet metal punches - a bit tougher in my experience and they do a variety of ratchet/electric/hydraulic punches. For Q-max punches, use a ball-race where possible, and a 8mm driver on a socket set - or better still an impact driver. Tomo
Or a length of scaff tube over a ring spanner. Nice and easy - as long as the workpiece is securely fastened down.
