I've used Cubase, Sound Tools, Acid and various other software tools, bul Ableton Live seems to combine the functionality of much of these in a single, usable format - and with a great tutorial. If you can only afford one package, you won't regret choosing Ableton! (disclaimer - I have no connection with Ableton, other than as a happy user!)
