dbuckley
There are two distinct seperate problems with laptops making unwanted racket. a) Earthing. Some brain damaged laptops (Are you listening DELL?) have earth continuity from the the earth pin of the the mains PSU to the computers internal earth, and thus to the audio out. This is normal earth loop territory with unbalanced sources. This problem can be solved by changing brand of laptop, or by using a DI box. Or you could run off batteries... b) Hash. I've yet to meet the laptop whose headphone output was clean enough to be considered fully acceptable for theatre use. This problem is solved by using an external USB audio interface. Note that if you have a problem laptop (see point a above) you'll still need to solve the earth loop problem by using a DI box or a USB interface with balanced outputs, so that the unbalancy induced racket is removed. A few USB devices do do balanced outs, but please dont fall for the Behringer BCA2000 like I did.
