Hi Paddy.

If you can let me know what part of the world you are in, I can ask around our safety forum here (Australia).

A lot of my colleagues have dealt with event safety around the world and may be ableto help.

Hi Folks,

There is no formal qualification in event health and safety as such.

The emergency planning college near york do a couple of courses that may be suitable including safety at festivals and mass gatherings or safety at sports grounds etc etc.

http://www.epcollege.gov.uk

A company called the event safety shop do tailored courses if there are a number of you who want some sort of introduction.

http://www.the-eventsafetyshop.co.uk

There are a number of courses run for specific subject areas such as rigging that total fabs used to do contact chris higgs. He may also be involved in new PLASA rigging scheme.

I daresay there are others. Sorry no link known

More general H&S courses would include IOSH working safely and managing safely and if you are feeling flush then NEBOSH general and construction certs are the higher level that have some accreditation to professional standards.

http://www.nebosh.co.uk

Event safety work is a bit of a specialism and general H&S regulations apply as in any workplace.

Hope this helps

Paddy,

You don't say where in the world you are. It might be an idea to put that into your profile, it helps people to make their answers to your question relevant (and to get the context behind your answers to their questions if you see what I mean).

Herb,

I've bookmarked a couple of those links, thanks for posting them.

There are a number of courses run for specific subject areas such as rigging that total fabs used to do contact chris higgs. He may also be involved in new PLASA rigging scheme.

He is, and he's still involved in training. He'll be one of a number of well known rigging industry stalwarts to make up the first generation of assessors for the new certificate. I agree, if you have a specific interest in rigging and/or structures, it would be an excellent idea to drop Chris a mail. He posts here fairly regularly, and may even pop up on this thread. Failing that you could e-mail or pm him via his Blue Room profile.

The NEBOSH course is the one you want . It is a general course but a lot of the sylabus is relevent to events indoor and outdoors . After all a work place is a work place .

NEBOSH is the standard in many industries, not just events/theatre. From there you work up through the IOSH qualifications to become a 'chartered' occ. health and safety professional, if you want to really make a career out of it.

Many NEBOSH courses are home-learning or evening classes, but ROSPA do two week (when I last checked) intensive courses if you want to get it done in one go.
