I interviewed about 8 years or so back, and got turned down (rightly I now think!).

It looked like an excellent course, however I suspect it was something that is more appropriate once you get some experience,

possibly more for a chief looking to convert to specialise in design then for a (looking back) rather green student!

That was the specialist lighting design course by the way, not the general theatre arts.

Regards, Dan.

I don't know much about the course but from what I hear it's pretty well-regarded. I know the guy who is head of sound, and if the other tutors are anything like as knowledgeable as he is it will be brilliant!

I have an MA in architecture, two years ago when I graduated school I have decided that I want to study set and costume design.

Since then I am working as a waitress while studying set and costume design at a private art school in Athens.

RADA is my dream and if I enter, my family will financial support me.

The reason I'm saying this is that I need your help! I would like to know the interview process.

What are they looking for? Is there something that I must be aware of? Any information will be extremely helpful as I'm not a native english speaker.

yup I'm going there in september for the sm/technical theatre course, see you there!!

the interview process is really good, they had a really good atmosphere and I thought they were all really friendly. basically you get there on the day and they give you a short talk, then a student will show you round the place which takes about an hour. then you're all brought back and given a form/questionnaire to fill out and interviewed one at a time. don't worry about the questionnaire, it looks more than it is, I was RUBBISH at mine and they still let me in so it can't carry too much weight!! its just about theatre history really.

my reply took about two months but I hear that's it pretty different for everyone, and they called me and then sent me a letter. they'll either give u a rejection, a holding letter or a place. have u been there before? (this is for the tta interview, I don't know if it's slightly different to the set/costume one)

ps does anyone know if they provide any help with finding somewhere to live? thanks :)

Helena thank you so much. you can't imagine how helpful your information is!

I applied at Theatre Design which is relevant with yours so I guess the procedure is similar!

They told me that the questionnaire contains theatrical terms, that I'm trying to memorize in english!

Do you have any advice regarding the portolio? I don't know what rada asks in terms of aesthetics!

I used to live in Paris and study in Stockholm so I'm familiar with their style-which is close to mine!

I was asked to take the interview on May.

Hopefully see you on Sept!

the difference is that theatre design is a postgraduate diploma so I believe that they will be more strict!

I'm due for an interview soon, for the stage elec and Lx Design course. Is anyone else in a similar position? Also how much are we expected to know about Theatre History for the question paper? I'm not asking for the questions but some advice on which area's to focus my learning on. (Im a final year Undergrad and time is precious!)

Hi, I have conditional offers at LIPA, Mountview, Rose Bruford and CSSD. I am waiting to hear back from RADA for an interview date however RADA does not go through UCAS so I have until 7th June to reply to the other four. At the momement I am mainly drawn towards CSSD and Rose Bruford on the Production Lighting course and the Creative Lighting Control course. I have applied for the Stage Electrics and Lighting Design Postgraduate course at RADA but as I still want to be a lighting programmer CSSD and Rose Bruford seem the best options. I will be going from a BTEC National Diploma in Production Arts (technical) at West Cheshire College Ellesmere Port and into uni for september/october 2011 start. I spoke to Mark the lighting tutor on my RADA open day who said although it is a postgraduate course I would still be suitable for an interview.

Hope this has helped, any tips for me would be appreciated.

Matt

Hi All,

I am an old student of the RADA Lighting Design Course. Graduated in 2003.

Those of you going will have a blast. One of the best things I ever did was attend RADA.

The theatres are amazing and the staff are great. I still keep in touch with the tutors there and when I was back in the UK a few months ago I dropped in for a coffee and a look around again.

The place is just the same but with even more kit and better kit then before.

Its a very highly regarded place and providing you are willing to work you will get everything out of it you put in.

The pace is busy, when I was there we did 17 shows in a year. Normally 3 at a time, opening within a day of each other. Its fantastic fun.

Not really much more I can say about it to recommend it enough. It gave me a great footing in the industry, although I only did traditional theatre for a year after RADA, I still use all the skills I learnt there on tour with Cirque.

If you want to know anything specific just ask me or PM or email me.

If you have been accepted then soon you will get an information pack with contact details of your collegues on the course. Make contact with them and meet up in London before you start. Its worth and that first day won't be so worrying when you walk through those doors!

thanks for the info, can't wait to get started there!

I was just wondering whether you knew when we would get the info pack? my post has been pretty messed up these past few weeks so I'm worried that they've sent it but I haven't received it (this happens a lot at my house!)

anyway, thanks again
