  1. What do you want to be able to do with it? Are you happy with sticking to standard resolutions or will you want to do custom sized canvases, blends etc?

     

    If it’s just switching standard sources I don’t think you can go far wrong with an Atem TVs 4K. It’s all SDI but you’d have plenty left to build a nice accessory rack with a monitor and some convertors. The TVS 4K has the nice trick of input scalers, so you can mix and match on that side of things.

     

    Contrary to Mac’s experiences above we have had generally good times with the analog way stuff we own, we run an Ascender which has done us proud over the last four years. Lots of very different events under its belt.

    Wonder if fibre would have been your friend here.

    Longest cable run was 5m! Fibre would have been overkill! With hindsight I would have done an ultra short hdmi link into a decimator and then SDI links to the projectors.

  3. We just did RAF fylingdales... ended up with 52k of projection (four 10k and one 12k) all lined up to get a decent brightness.

     

    Power wasn’t our problem (45kVa road row genny), interference was! Something to do with being 180m from one of the worlds most powerful radar arrays didn’t play nicely with HDMI links. Ended up dropping to HD and running everything SDI.

  4. My mum came out of hospital after having a lung infection - she's back in again, and they discovered she's luckily not got the virus - just the same lung infection. The only downside is I cannot visit - the hospital is coded green and yellow. New ambulance car park and a new A&E ward - turn right for green A&E - not corona suspected, and left to yellow for got it, or unknown. They're coping at the moment pretty well.

     

    I think surveys like the one Kerry linked to could be very useful for collecting data, because loads of decisions we are having made are based on quite limited data, so the more that is collated the better.

  5. I’ve seen their rendering of a product for a few years. Haven’t seen one in the flesh other than the fleeting glimpse in a YouTube review.

     

    Keeps showing up because I work for another company called AV Matrix! We usually have a laugh about how nice it would be to buy branded products, then remember that we like blackmagic and decimator kit.

  6. Could you adapt something designed for PowerPoint like the Interspace Industries system?

    You could probably hook up an interspace micro cue to trigger Companion (from Bitfocus), which in turn would fire OSC at your hopefully compatible Lx desk!

  7. You can setup and test companion without a stream deck. It has a full emulator mode, and a web interface too.

     

    Stunningly powerful bit of kit. We use it with a small app on remote Pcs to control Powerpoint. Also to trigger playback pro plus, and control the switcher! You can create multiple action buttons, so a single press can switch our Ascender to the correct input, then fire the VT on a MacBook.

  8. What resolution do you want to send? Is delay an issue?

     

    Some of the hdbaset kits are phenomenal now, but your cabling must be top notch! These can give you 4K capacity and very low latency

     

    Av over Ip solutions tend to be a bit more forgiving about cable quality and can run through existing networks and switches etc. You can get various quality boxes, but latency is going to be a real factor. Perfect for distribution around a venue where you can only see one screen at once.

     

    30 to 50m is relatively short distances. I’d also consider the SDI route if you can. It’s very robust and easy to extend.

  9. What can be a problem with long runs of tape is the ground voltage gradually rises up due to volt drop. When you refeed the power this can muck up the logic levels and the 2nd run of tape can be unreliable.

     

    Would feeding the power in from both ends mitigate this?

     

     

    Pmiller is right about the fuse, the psu will just go into protect before it blows if you put a dead short on. However you can make lots of smoke and possibly fire if you get a low resistance across the psu.

     

    What can be done to protect things?

    I figured there must be a way around extending the control signal, having the controllers centrally located must be preferable in a lot of installations? I'll look into the RS485 converters you mention, I'll also investigate this solution that I spotted while trawling youtube!

     

    As Tim pointed out above I need to split the power into smaller chunks to keep the power drop to a minimum. I have no issue running chunky flex up to the tape. Split in half I'll be looking at a theoretical max of 15A draw per line, so 1.5mm H07 should cope with the current. From your experience is it simply not worth having fuse protection on the tape side of the PSU? or just go for a much lower rating?

  11. You will need to feed the power again at the 5m point. On all the tape I've used the colours go funny after 5m due to voltage drop.

    I was afraid this might be a (sensible) suggestion.

     

    I'll re-design to keep the power and data separate right to the point of joining the tape then, having a couple of power outlets per "power injector" enclosure and only daisy chaining the data.
