I was also slightly amused by a Green Fair mounted yesterday here in the middle of nowhere approached only by steep pedestrian unfriendly hills and with no public transport links within, I suppose, four miles. Nearest rail Petersfield 7.3 miles.

Charge them the right hire for a start. I spent hours twenty five years ago convincing the powers that be that the hirers of our theatre space weren't covering the running costs. It got through eventually.

Lack of height and space in such rooms is an age old problem and one we used to solve quite often by using a box of simple reflector floods stood behind the columns at the sides - indeed people like SAI used to make things for the purpose which clipped together to form a carrying case. It didn't look great but it was lighting it squirted pretty colours all over the place it was dead simple and it saved a lot of bother with stands and wiring and colours. It was all designed for a one person outfit and quick get ins out outs. From a convenience point of view it had a lot going for it particularly for people like me who distrust stands in places difficult to supervise.In the end I decided that getting decent lighting in the average small concert space was impossible so cheap and cheerful was the way to go....Having seen many a band touring pricey lighting that was doing a grand job of lighting the drummer and the back wall and not much else I've never seen the need to change that view.

You need a decent tower not this over complicated solution that gives you a mere 30 cm more height. If you do get one chain those outrigger pins to the chassis.

 

The biggest issue for me is the fact that the designers have festooned the outrigger housings with hazard tape but the main hazard - that towbar which extends right outside the footprint and will be walked into frequently and painfully in poor lighting - has none. I wouldn't give it houseroom for that reason alone.

The platform height of this fully extended is only 4.5m.

 

Get it demo'd to the students - not to you. They will be in procurement at some time and you could build a really good piece of coursework around this purchase.

I can see this device as being useful to certain trades but as a tool for frequent repositioning indoors I don't think it's relevant. Continual winding up and down of the outriggers even a bit and the two arm winch would soon get a bit wearing I think. I loathe the Tallescope with a passion (quite irrationally I grant you) but I think the last post gets things right.

 

 

 

It must be something to do with the initials KM - about 15 years ago a dreamer from Essex floated a group of companies and/or trading styles one of which KMW Seaways aka KMW Marine Services managed to bounce the local media and local authority into taking them seriously as a possible operator of the Portsmouth Le Havre ferry route. . Maintaining and repairing LED fixtures is not something many venues will be able to do in house, unlike tungsten fixtures which rarely needed much more than standard hand tools.

 

And not very many at that.

 

This seems very similar to that period in the 1970s when the coin machine trade was changing over from largely mechanical and electromechanical to full electronic.It was a steep learning curve for many an old field engineers, the trade press was full of training articles. With LED rigs I'd be well out of my repairing depth now...

 

The reason I gave the rather flip answer earlier though is that nobody should be expected to fund repairs without a full explanation of why, how it their responsibility, and why it has cost what it has.

 

 

Find a different venue.

Based on personal experience I'd suggest that entering a new venue you ask where the first aid kit is and can you see it. You might be surprised. The last time I needed one in a venue once they'd found the staffer who had the key to the office and then opened every cupboard when it was found the box was OK but that was about it. I may have mentioned this before but since then I always carry the basics in an old tobacco tin (from a misspent youth). For those who don't know even a minor cut on someone even on only one asprin a day (like me) can get very messy very quickly without being in any way serious.

Don't forget to search casualties for medical alerts. I have a distinctive wrist strap but some looks just like jewelry. Also give the on/off button of any smartphones a press as this will usually bring up emergency information.

 

In a trauma situation we are specifically taught not to bother looking for alert bracelets.

 

In the general ambulance world, we also are taught that alert bracelets are of limited use / ignore them initially. You treat what you see, what can be reversed etc. If you are unco, no bracelet will be looked at, we follow the standard DRABCDE pattern. Does not matter if you are diabetic and wearing a bracelet, I am going to do a BM on you and check your sugar levels anyway - people have been caught out before seeing bracelets and then focussing on that as the cause.

 

And those bracelets which require some sort of device or phone to see the contents ........ not worth it. If you are not well enough to tell me whats wrong with you, I am not wasting time whipping out my phone, looking at a qr code, and deciphering some obscure alert, all the time you are deteriorating. You know what you need ? - your name somewhere and your DOB. That is all I need to do a summary care record print from the nhs system, with all your details, allergies etc on.

 

Some people think they need to let us know all sorts. Pre hospitally, nope. If you cant tell us yourself, you have bigger issues than your past history.

 

In hospital ? - nope, there's the nhs system for that.

 

Well all that makes absolute sense I must say (I mean this - it all makes complete sense and backs up what happened when I walked into the car boot lid and needed attention. Not my finest moment...) so it looks like I wasted my money then - on the basis of advice I was given in hospital. Mind you it came from China for £5 post paid so not a lot of money. It simply alerts them to the presence of a device.

I'm now wondering whether, slightly counter-intuitively, a non-dimmable fixture might actually be better in this application. The dimmable ones often seem to contain drivers to cope with the unhelpful phase control dimmers that they're expected to be used with so perhaps the non-dimmable ones are more simple and hence easier to PWM? Lamps with a simple dropper resistor won't dim with a triac dimmer but are perfect for PWM. Is my thinking way off here?

 

I don't think it's counter intuitive at all, back when such foots were in use they were as likely to be on a blackout switch as a dimmer. Remember they are the last reminders of gas instals...

The truth is that even suppliers of so-called dimmable LED lamps are cagey about whether they will actually dim satisfactorilly in many cases.

They have a nice retro look, the blue suited them, and were well made - I'd go with Yorkie's suggestion of BC. They'll make a nice feature esp if you still have the barn doors.

The shows they'll be used for have quite a vintage aesthetic so I'm aiming for something reasonably authentic looking from the audience perspective. I think how they look on the performer side is less important as long as the light output is warm and smooth. I suspect most in the audience won't have seen the genuine article in use so there may be an element of hitting an expectation rather than being completely authentic.

Yes I know it's not LED but it is simple and it will do what you seem to want - simply. If you want easy dimming and control it seems to me to be the most convenient way.

There are plenty of low voltage lightbulb shape lamps available if you want that form factor. It would be a help to me understand your needs if you said whether you wanted the Clamshells to look like the genuine article light-wise or whether you have another aim.

This case and one other case prior to that which I have forgotten sent my authority into something of a panic and we all had for the first time to prove everything beyond the one thing they could check which was whether you had completed the probationary year. I recall my head at the time when he was handing out the forms saying: "When you think I have got all the way to this job without anybody asking me to at least prove I was who I say I was ... "

I never knew if anything odd came up about anybody as I left the game soon after.

I'm not really trying to champion these schemes and it can be annoying when you are trying to access a building site and have to produce credentials, but I believe the intent is good and that (hopefully) standards will improve.

 

I hope things have changed now but I would have been a firm supporter of these things even if they were merely a firm reliable ID system only in 1990-1992 when a major building project was taking place in my educational institution while we were still open and we were alarmed when it became clear that in some cases the main contractor had only the haziest idea who some of the subbies were and who was on site at any time. (Mind you this was before the Sion Jenkins case and others which alerted us all to the fact that as staff we had never really had to prove who we were and whether we had the qualifications we claimed.)

Unless the floor is absolutely even like well screeded sealed concrete with no ruts etc I'd say use wheels. Actually I think I'd use wheels anyway - easier to check, easier to maintain.

Get 100mm ones, two with brakes, and spend as much as you can afford. I would budget for at least £10 each. Even light duty catering trolleys have big castors.
