  1. For a 50m run, the volt drop at 12v needs to be considered if the cameras are sensitive to supply voltage. At your quoted 1.7A, you'd loose around 3v using 1mm conductors. You'd need something in the region of 6mm to avoid significant loss! You could of course use 1mm conductors and wind up the supply voltage to compensate, but that would then mean pairing up the PSUs with cable lengths... I'd look at PoE solutions as it's a proven standard.
  2. The fact that the OP mentions a previous company supplying the system went under is a good indication of why the DIY approach is preferred. We've got a flat-screen TV in the foyer and an old PC tucked away running Powerpoint - I like the idea of USB sticks and media players, but this was put in before my involvement.
