timpman19
hi For a school concert we need a way of hanging a cloth approx 1 metre wide so we are able to release it and it to drop to the floor to reveal a person behind it. as this is a low/ no budget show how can we do this on the cheap any ideas thanks josh
robloxley
Do a search (I'm sure we've discussed it here before, but of not then Google) for kabuki drops.
TomLyall
If the cloth is only a metre wide, and not very heavy, you may find that a pair of 'slipknots' (sorry, my knowledge of knots is awful, someone will be able to elaborate I'm sure).
Grahame
Batten of wood, place screw eyes into it at whatever spacing you need - say 15cm. Mount vertically or at a slight angle. The cloth needs hanging loops at the same spacing. Get an equal number of stage pins and tie them to a length of string at the same spacing. Tie off end of string at onstage end of wood batten, leaving enough slack before the first stage pin. Hook the cloth loops to the screw eyes using the stage pins, run loose end of string offstage using pulleys or even loops of sash. When you pull on the string the stage pins pop out of the screw eyes and the cloth falls. If cloth is heavy you can use pairs of screw eyes and sandwich the hanging loops between the two. Jivemaster
Big cup hooks screwed into a board, rotate the board to tip the cloth off the hooks.
TallPaul
Grahame's idea sounds best to me. I've built a similar thing before, but without the idea of keeping the sash cord captive by tying it off. Will give a nice clean drop.
Bewildered
We used some of those really big bulldog clips attached to a strip of wood at the top, then a stage hand just gives the cloth a sharp tug, seemed to work

This type of kabuki drop has worked well for us
tivoliproduction
I have a show coming up this saturday where the director wants cloths to basically appear, I have seen the above thread but in my stupidness cant get my head round how the system works!! any chance someone can pm me a diagram please? I need to get these done for 4 cloths in total which will certainly keep me busy this week!! :** laughs out loud **:
paulears
Kabuki style drops make cloths drop quickly, on cue - making cloths appear in the same way would have to be a totally different system. Cheap mechanisms mainly consist of a bar that can rotate. hooks mounted on this bar hold the cloth. rotate the bar and the hooks move from horizontal to vertical, and the cloth falls off.
