This three-week specialist course is designed for young people aged 17 plus and adults interested in developing their understanding and knowledge of technical prosthetic skills. The only one of its kind in the UK, this course is a fantastic opportunity for those wishing to explore this specialist craft to the next level, pursue a pathway to further training or explore a career in this field.
By the end of the courses participants should have:
gained knowledge of advanced prosthetic techniques and processes
engaged in a creative processes from design to realisation
worked with a variety of traditional and cutting-edge design materials
covered essential health and safety in prosthetics practice
The first part of the course offers an introduction to prosthetics includingcasting and sculpting techniques, and simple prosthetic techniques in latex, gelatine and silicone. Participants will have the opportunity to produce a number of their own special-effect prosthetics suitable for use in stage and film.
The second part will build on participants basic skills and engage them in advanced level prosthetics design and realisation. Thisaddresses more advanced processes, principally glass fibre moulds, silicone appliances, detail sculpting and final painting and blending.
Working with both traditional and cutting-edge materials, participants will have the opportunity to work with industry professionals who will support and guide learning throughout the course. Health and safety in practice will also be covered.
The course will provide a fun, supportive and challenging environment in which all participants from beginners to advanced can explore and learn.
The will be lead by Martin Mallorie, the Academy's award-winning Lecturer in Design and Props.
