Just wondering what people think of the thomann copies of the Shure sm 57 and the Beta 58. Are they anywhere near as good? I am thinking about purchasing some and your opinions would be a great help!

Thanks

I don't know the mics you have mentioned but recently tested an Audio Technica ATM 41 against a Shure Beta 58 and to my ears the ATM 41 was noticable better alround and we sell the ATM 41 for £59 !!!! So you might want to look at Audio Technica before you make a decision . So far have not found any mic that comes close to the SM 57 as an instrument mic except maybe the Unidyne III .

The thomann copy of the 57 isn't that bad at all, I have 4 along with 6 sm57s. especially good for the ££. not tried their 58 copy (I'm not a 58 person to be honest although I have a few of them).

DAP do copies of the 57 and 58 and now do a copy of the beta 57 and beta 58. and the kick and drum/instrument beta's

They have to sell them with a grey rim around the centre of the mic, but they sell the mic heads with the blue/green rim separately so they look... closer. I have no experience with any of these however.

The cheap Thomann condenser pairs (em...800 is it..bout £50) are really good for the money. I've taken to using them for overheads and hats on gigs where gear can sometimes be misused shall we say. Usually for this type of show the source material isn't good enough to warrant a better mic anyway.

Used by the right person and as long as its not swallowed or handled to heavily the beyer Opus 39 is better sounding than the 58 anyway. and they're practically giving them away.

Before I cause an argument I'm not saying 58's are bad. They're a great all round mic. A decent sound, robust, reliable. I just feel that there are better SOUNDING mics out there for the same sort of money if not alot less.

ok then I think I might get a few of the sm57 copies, for the price of 25 quid I don't think I can go wrong! Do you have a link for the site for the audio technica stuff sound very interesting. When I get hold of the 57 copies I will do a test between the shure and the thomann copies (we use the shure sm57 for snare) and I'll share the info that I get from it

oh and a link for the DAP mics would be cool!

Thanks again!

Dap Microphones

can't seem to find the beta style grills from there but the product codes to enter into the search are

d1312 (for the 58)

d1311 (for the 57) and (beta 56A etc)

d1313 (for the kick drum mic... similar to beta 52)

Hope this helps
