Reggae Zellweger
I am in need of good budget MDF boards to lay underneath the stage flooring for a festival stage, size 19 by 20 meter. If anyone could point me into a direction or give me a quotation it would be highly appreciated. Many Thanks Bjorn

erroneousblack
I'd use 3/4 ply instead, a lot easier to handle and none of the implications if you need to cut it!
paul the paranoid lampy
I would find a timber merchant local to the gig, and haggle the price. I'd also use ply as its much better to use I e cutting the stuff and you dont need to seal it against water as mdf is sponge like IMO
paulears
Depend on what is going to happen to it after the gig. The stage area is big - so ply will last longer (not required), is better when wet (MDF isn't that bad when sealed with even emulsion), Ply give you splinters, ply is heavier and lastly - a darn sight more expensive. MDF dust outside isn't too much of a problem with a mask. MDF is smoother, easier to work, doesn't wreck the blades so quickly, and routers love it! For permanent installs, then that is when I would go ply.

Shuttering Ply (only finished one side), would work out cheaper. As for cutting it outside, even with a mask I wouldn't touch the stuff, and especially not with a router! Many people in the know consider MDF the new asbestos, I will only allow it in my current (and previous) venue, if it is finished, sealed and in good condition. paulears
And what do you base this ban on? The dangers seem mainly now to be just a dust problem - the carcinogenic evidence now seems to be unproven. Irritant, I believe is now the correct description. As long as there is no long term damage by chemicals, then masks and eye protection seem sufficient. Personally, I'd rate the danger from cutting ply higher - I've never cut myself, got splinters or damaged myself with MDF. A few years ago, it was treated as if it was very nasty, but now just horrible to be near, dust wise. Given a choice between working with ply or MDF, I'll stick with MDF. If there is some verifiable evidence of it's danger - please do post it.
