gareth Posted July 24, 2005 Posted July 24, 2005 Slightly odd question, this, but tenuously sound-related ... Does anyone know of a piece of software (ideally freeware!!) that'll take the artist information from the ID3 tag of an MP3 file, extract some suitable genre information from something like CDDB, FreeDB, mp3.com, allmusic.com, etc., and plug that genre info back into the ID3 tag?
jimeee Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Funny you should ask, I was looking for something like that just last week! After a few googles and some software that claimed to do all and did **** all I found Media Monkey and it worked well enough for my needs. It takes any IDv3 information available and fills in the rest from an online database (I'm not sure which one, but it doesn't really matter!) I have found it to be quite intuitive. You do however have to be wary when you are updating the info because it will occasionally find a match that's not the same song (if it has a similar enough title) and if you click update it will change the song title too. An easy mistake to make when batch converting and a b*tch to fix when you don't know what song to look for to change! I found that one out the hard way! Hope this helps.
Freddie Posted July 25, 2005 Posted July 25, 2005 Hated as it is, M$ WMP can do something like that if you add it to your "media library".
owaring Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 Get iTunes.... Automatically contacts cddb on CD insert..... Select tracks to update... Hit Ctrl-I or Apple-I... Ammend the ID3 field(s) as required... Voila! (iTunes is free btw)
bruce Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 www.musicbrainz.org As well as dealing with the cddb-type stuff, it does some sort of "audio fingerprint" of MP3 files - so can automatically identify and label individual MP3s. I was skeptical, then surprised. Bruce.
Ilthigore Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 Get iTunes.... I don't think iTunes does what Gareth wants, but for those of you still stuck on Windows Media Player, yes, get iTunes! It's just better overall, although spend half an hour with it before you judge it. If you've been messed around with "secure" WMA files then it could annoy you though - but that's MS's fault. Here for iTunes (I don't work for them, I just really like good free software - by the way, if you're not using Firefox, try it now).
zonino Posted August 20, 2005 Posted August 20, 2005 but I find itunes really slows down my computer considerably, still use it over mediaplayer though!
James Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 Just been looking at MediaBrainz. I'm also trying to do what Gareth was talking about in his first post. MediaBrainz seems very nice but I can't see any mention of genre tags anywhere in it. Am I being blind or can anyone correct me? Cheers James
