Ald Membership

Been thinking of late (well the last 6 months) about joining ALD as an associate member. Now obviously I don't do as near enough work to warrant being a pro member, so is there any real benefit to joining as an Associate, or to just wait to the time (whenever that'll be) that I'm doing enough LD work to be able to join.

All thoughts on this gratefully received...

Cheers

Bit Controversial, but is there any point being a member at all? I was once a long-term member & contributor, but when the time came to upgrade from Student to Associate/Pro I decided to leave. It was at that time when they were bickering about splitting Professional Membership into levels relating to number of shows etc – I don’t think membership levels should be judged on the amount of shows you light, should they not be promoting quality not quantity?

However, what about a rival association? In the Real Ale’LD all members meetings would naturally take place in the pub, celebrating this, the association magazine would be named ‘Out of Focus’. ‘Artificial Light Picture Gallery’ would celebrate some of the world’s worst lit public places, and in the first issue we could run a feature on making a ‘Kylie Dancer Visor’ (you know the ones) our of a piece of #021, some elastic and some scroll tape. Our registered charity for Board Operators with repetitive strain injury would be duly named ‘Hand Relief’.

So are you all with me?

Um, ok then I’ll go it alone…

Well yes I'm trying to work out if there is any point, or perhaps just waiting til I'm a full pro LD (so that'll be a loooooooooong wait... hehe).

I agree on the quality as opposed to the quantity.

And the charity 'Hand Relief' made me chuckle...

Will beards and beer-bellies be a neccessary requirement for membership?

If you do decide to get false beards and bellies for your meetings, could I please borrow them on non meeting nights? I plan to start up a Brian Blessed lookalike agency and fan club.

Yours etc etc <shouty shouty>

Stu why not join and see how it works for a year?

As my ALD Membership number will confirm ( 0045) I was one of . well... the first 45 people to join hehehehehehe  . frankly it is only in recent times the ALD has even been asked to comment on important things like fees, rights, copyright etc. Rather than an association it is more of a club...... nothing really useful coming out of it of any real use....... But the same could be said about Equity?

If one is to join you may as well go for the full membership......

(Having laid the trap, we wait and see if there any real ale drinkers here to take the bait...)

N.

Steps wantonly into trap

I like a drop of real ale, and am freshly shaven. (I'm saying nowt about the belly...)

Seriously though, folks. I'm going to cancel my ALD membership this time round ... Focus just annoys me, and the attitude of exclusivity bothers me somewhat. (particularly at a time when the ABTT are moving in the opposite direction.)

Yes good point Mr Thirdtap - I suppose I'd only lose £30 or so!

:D

Stu

PS: £30 is good for at least 12 pints of Real Ale. Maybe more out in the sticks...

How dare you! In my local in North Beckenham (aka Catford) I can obtain 19 pints of real ale for £30, and still have change for a packet of Cheese McCoys. "The sticks", I ask you :D
