3guk Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Hi Guys, Just a question for you would a phantom power tester be a useful tool to have in your toolbox !? Might be useful for checking a line for the presence of 48v when not near the desk ?? Thanks
david.elsbury Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Hmm... Why the need to test for it?- Either you know you turned it on at the desk, or you've forgotton.....- If the device (condensor mic, DI, whatever) doesn't go when you get back to the desk, then you've forgotton.....- If phantom is on but the device is not working, you have a bad cable (screen fault) and you'd know- cos the phantom would be on at the desk.... But sure, if it's another random thingymahbob to keep in the toolkit. It'd probably be fairly simple to make using a couple of LED's and resistors.
techwsussex Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Yeah, they can be useful. Where I work, most of the equipment is behind panels to stop people getting at it, and the multicore terminates behind one of these. The testers come in handy because otherwise we'd have to remove panels, bits of equipment, etc... We got two from Canford, they're a few quid each, and it doesn't work out much cheaper to make your own, I think. Owen
benge Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Can I just ask wot is wrong with a multimeter? Just a thought. Ben
Andrew C Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 What about a tone generator run from phantom? You would need to think about the level prior to plugging in, but it will confirm that you have power with a built in LED even with the faders down. I think mine came from CPC.
techwsussex Posted July 20, 2005 Posted July 20, 2005 Can I just ask wot is wrong with a multimeter? Just a thought. Ben<{POST_SNAPBACK}> There's nothing wrong with a multimeter. However I find it much easier to plug a little neutrik XLRM to our (somewhat hard to get at) multicore stage boxes. They're useful if you need to do lots of tests. And the testers have two LEDs so they test everything on one line at once, essentially twice as quick. Owen
london sound Posted July 22, 2005 Posted July 22, 2005 Here's one in Finish but not difficult to work out Tester Also lots of other goodies. Have fun Ian
