_Lots of MIDI cable_

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I can hire about 30m of midi cable from? And would this work without repeaters every so often? I've had a look around but I can't find anywhere that have this for hire. Sale will do if it's not too costly.

I'm going to be using a midi keyboard to control Arkaos VJ from the back of the venue, but unfortunately the computer the software is running off is in a rack at the front.

Your going to have less problems extending the output of the computer on VGA cable if there is any possibility of moving the machine FOH.

Otherwise I think Studio Spares sell midi line drivers, I doubt may places will have them in 'hire stock'

The midi spec specifies a maximum cable length of 15m (or is it 50 feet?)

Longer cables may well work - especially if you use decent cable -but they're out of spec, so should not be relied on.

You can get midi line drivers - the Philip Rees ones come to mind, but there are several others - which can extend this up to hundreds of metres.

Charlie Richmond has frequently mentioned that he has run MIDI over a km without repeaters He has a section on the subject on his show control website

Not sure of the 'proper' length but we use a 30m VGA xtn at church and it works just fine

If you have problems you could try a line driver/amp at the start of the run.

Just make sure the cable has coax cores for red green and blue and not just plain wires.

I have used a 50m run from laptop to projector with no noticable problems (ie still good image quality etc, so no obvious loss of signal.
