Hey, I found a Sony didgital CD player and a pair of speakers that had been lyring around in our attic for a while, and I'd like to set up a proper sound system in my bedroom. Do I need to buy a preamp as well, or if I buy a power amplifier on it's own would that be ok.

At the moment I'm just using a cheap arse Argos thing but I'd like to set up a nice sound rig, and I'll probably get a mixer at some point too.

Any ideas on power amps?

My uncle has 3 NADs in his flat, and he may give me his third one..

If the NAD is a pure power amp, then you will need a pre-amp. Best bet for a cheap-ish solution may be one of Richer Sounds "Manager's Specials". You may get a pre or a combination unit.

Just depends what they have in so you'll have to do some legwork!

The output of the cd player will not be enough to drive the speakers you have to any useable level. Therefore you will need a power amplifier. If you want some form of volume control then some form of pre amp would be desirable so a power amp on its own would work but a pre would be useful if you amplifier doesn't have one built into it already

Is cheap arse a technical term. If so can you explain it please because I haven't come across it before. What do you want a mixer for? Why do you want this stereo rig, and what do you want to know about it. And as for power amplifiers, I don't' think I have ever had an original idea about them before, other people have though, you might want to look into class A, class B and current dumping for a start. Try to find out what they are, what the differences are with their respective merits and demerits and you might be closer to understanding what questions you want to be asking

NAD whats?, C272s c320BEEs or what? NAD have made a lot of amplifiers. Asking a question like that is like asking can you get 40 people in a Volvo.

 

Sorry if I'm in a grouchy mood this evening but I'm irritated your question wasn't specific enough to be able to give you a more helpful answer.
