LeeStoddart Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 I'd generally refer to it as a lighting BOARD but might use the term Lighting DESK - probably in roughly equal measures. From all of the previous answers I suspect there is no "standard" term - they seem to be fairly interchangeable.
ChrisD Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 Board/Desk. Occasionally refer to a desk by manuafacturer/model number/name for ease of reference. Has been called many other things 'tho!
gnomatron Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 "desk" or "lighting desk" for lx, depening on context, and "desk", "sound desk" or "mixer" for the sound... um... desk. "mixer" is often a dj mixer. Mind you, mixer size has a big part to play in nomenclature - a 12 channel folio desk is about the lower limit for calling it a "desk", to my mind.
gaspipe58 Posted July 17, 2005 Posted July 17, 2005 At school we have one or two people (inc Head of Drama) who call the lighting board/desk/whatever a mixer  Does make me cringe.
JimWebber Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 The poll needs an option for "two or more of the above". ;) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I use "Desk" or "Board" in equal measure. Noise is a "Mixer"
Scouse Dave Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 normally desk, sometimes board, and on the odd ocasion f****** b****** useless heap of s**t<{POST_SNAPBACK}>I feel your pain. Normally desk. Occasionally board (Learnt from my theatrical wife). I would occasionally call a digital desk (lighting or sound) a console (even though the most common control surface referred to as a console is an organ console... the majority of them are analogue...) Language is a funny thing, in't it? Dave M
Liquid Nik Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 normally desk, sometimes board, and on the odd ocasion f****** b****** useless heap of s**t With you all the way on that one !!!
andy_s Posted July 18, 2005 Posted July 18, 2005 the credits always say 'board op' not 'desk op' so by rights its a board, but still, I sometimes call it a desk too. but depends on the situations - if all kit is in same place, asking someone to 'sit on the [desk]' will get you some stupid situations if in the wrong mood.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think this stems from a spelling mistake now lost in the misseds of thyme - I was once a bored op......well more than once probably... OK - who said the old ones were the best..... to actually answer the question - I usually call it board if it's lighting, desk if it's sound - our transatlantic brothers and sisters do talk about soundboards, I've certainly been heard to mention the lighting desk, and I've even heard the sound desk called a worksurface. I think that may be something the computer buffs have dreamt up.
