Hello again

Im working on lighting upgrade quotes and came across Elumen8 profiles, particularly the Virtuoso 1000, for around 1/2 the price of an ETC engine they seem to offer pretty good value, is anyone familiar with the make/product line?  are they cheap and nasty or just sensibly priced? these would be to replace  1200w foh profiles which are generally inaccessible (hence the colour mixing)

grateful for any opinions on this.

I haven't tried the profiles, but we have a FOH wash of the TZ350 RGBW Fresnels and some of the smaller MP75 fresnels on stage.  They all work OK and have been fairly reliable.  We have had more grief with the ADJ Encore 1000 profiles with power supply and other board failure so I wouldn't recommend those.  We put loads of TZ350s on school projects and don't get many back.

There is some service and parts support for Elumen8 stuff in the UK.  They won't be as good as an ETC, but we have been having increasing amounts of ETC stuff back more recently.  I think the Elumen8 stuff is OK - there is lots of much worse Chinese stuff out there.

So sorry not a direct answer on the specific product but hopefully a useful comment on the brand.

We've got 6 mp75 fresnels. We've had them for a few years. One of them failed but we were able to get a replacement control board from prolight concepts and fix it. We've also played with the larger RGBALC mp180 fresnels which give much better pastels and whites than the RGBW mp75. We also gave a couple of mp60 white fresnels that feel similar to 500W halogen fixtures.

Don't forget you also need to purchase lenses (unless you already have compatible lenses), so that needs to be figured into the price, although you're still coming in well under the ETC price, of course. As with all these things, while you can glean a lot from specs and asking around, in the end you need to get a supplier to let you audition the fixtures in your space, on your lighting positions, from your control desk, so that you can see how it all works for you realistically.

I'm pretty sure elumen8 are a Prolight brand or subsidiary. Prolight are usually pretty good for support.

I've used the MP range of fresnels in some installs, and they are a good a good balance of price/performance. Never used the Virtuoso profiles though.

elumen8 are a Prolight brand (along with LEDJ and Equinox) but Prolight is not the same as Prolights.  I have good experience of a number of Prolights products although not any of the profiles.  AC provide excellent support and I would recommend arranging a demo.

Prolight (aka Prolight Concepts (UK)) is a British company that sells a few different brands, including Elumen8, LEDJ and others.  I'm assuming (but don't know) that the products are manufactured under contract in China.

Prolights (a subsidiary of Music and Lights SRL) is an Italian manufacturer of lighting equipment including the Eclipse range of LED profiles.

Prolyte (a subsidiary of Area 4 Industries) is an originally Dutch manufacturer of truss and other welded aluminum products, who now mainly manufacture in the Czech Republic.

Not at all confusing.  😵‍💫

at the risk of getting completely off topic, there's also 'Prolive Group' who market staging that has remarkable similarities and apparent compatibility with two Prolyte products

so much for the ole adage " if its got pro or professional in the name it isn't"

That's about right.

I've used a lot of the prolight brands along with more expensive fixtures on professional shows (elumen8 and LEDJ) and I think they are good value for money, I have also had good response getting spares when things break. Yes they are cheap but that means you can have a lot of them to fill out the rig for the same money as a few Robe or ETC fixtures.

As the others have suggested, ask for a demo of the fixtures you're interested in.

It still holds true that anything with "ultra" in the name should be treated with suspicion...

Horses for courses, I've got quite a bit of Prolight (Concepts) kit in hire stock. It does very well for what it costs. Some of the very entry-level stuff isn't brilliant, but no worse than comparable items from others. Meanwhile I've had some positive comments from touring LDs before they've known what brand the moving lights are.
