Newbie to the forum - and fairly green at lighting in general.

Anyway, I've ended up being Lighting Director for a production of Peter Pan. The directors have request that when Tinkerbell throws her fairydust, there is a twinkling effect.

A strobe would be too harsh. I need something gentle but with a magical effect. I'd appreciate any suggestion on how to achieve this. I hope that's sufficient information.

I'm thinking mirror ball, with something bright and tightly focussed pointed at it.

Alternatively, from disco land, a 'Star Ball' which is a kind of inside out mirror ball. Similar effect but the light source is inside the ball.

It may sound daft but two mirror balls gives a fantastic effect especially if you can may one run slower than the other. Tightly focussed lights pointing at an angle to the top provides a better effect IMHO than the normal 90 degree of similar beam.

not if you use loads of small low power strobes scattered around,or maybe strings  of white leds  that have  a random flicker pattern

I have not done this, but a fine water mist falling down would mimic the fairy dust falling down, maybe three LED Par's on three different addresses with a chase effect with 100% overlap to get the shimmer effect.
