I'm seeing reports they have entered voluntary liquidation - anyone got any meat to put on the bones?

Oh dear, I placed an order Thursday, fortunately under £50 but only due to their big sale event.

I see their website is now image.png.2a41a8a12f05053af1f8d787c74adc3d.png

A shame. I used to use their little shop in Islington, where you had to battle with the traffic wardens when loading. The North Circular shop was much more convenient, though the service was incredibly slow. Never tried the mail-order service.

I used to use them every week when they started back in the 80s.

These days, the prices on "good" gear wasn't necessarily competitive and the sales often seemed to be mainly for their own brand copies of good gear...

A pity see them go though.

I've been talking to a colleague who reckons they had an outlet in Edgeware Road, just north of the flyover on the west side with a rear vehicle space for collections along a one way side road. He described juust as I remember it although I thought it was called something like sound city, city sound, stage sound? I felt very out of place buying a cut length of mic cable and half a dozrn XLRs when another rolled his heavy wooden drum of multicore along. Which they carried large stocks of.

I thought their shop was in Tottenham Court Road not far from 'Henry's Radio' in the late 60's/70's? May have had more than one of course.

Equally I'd say the place I'm thinking of was alongside one Henry's and across the road from the branch that did chassis/box metalwork.

I was a customer of Studiospares Limited from the 90s, and bought quite a lot of stuff, which I still use.  I happen to have a 2018 catalogue. It carries a personal message from Barry Lambden, who founded the business in 1983. Evidently about that time he decided to retire, understandable in view of his age, as an official announcement in November 2018 reported a management buyout, with the business being transferred to Studiospares Europe Limited under new directors.

This is borne out by records at Companies House. Studiospares Limited was definitely a going concern in 2018. It was finally wound up in 2022. Studiospares Europe Limited was registered in August 2018. I am no accountant, but the latest accounts do not seem to show a happy position.

Studiospares Limited initially traded from Stuckley Place, Camden Town, NW1, moving in 1995 to Rochester Place, also in Camden Town. I certainly went to their North Circular Road address, where they moved in 2003. They were still there in 2018 at the handover. However the following year  Europe Limited reported a move to Bilton Way, Luton.

Evidently a lot of nostalgic memories abound!

Studio Spares website was still active, and showing a sale, Sept 5th when I placed an order and CC debited.

Its a shame as they were local to me after the move so great for last minute collects, they had some great sales this year and the last time I collected they said they were looking to reduce stockholding drastically. Their range has also been decreasing over the last couple of years. The showroom never properly re-opened post covid so I used to browse less online than in the showroom where I could always chat about gear.

It will also affect a couple of tech friends who were working for them the last time I caught up with them.

Hopefully some form of salvaged company will come out of it, if not a warehouse and containers of gear including the own brand stuff may be being liquidated.

The move to Rochester Place might have been 1993 or early 1994 - most of the sound hardware for a new venue in the City came from there (Barry Lambden very much in evidence). We opened in Jan 1994, but the place was far from finished, so the sound rig (Revoxes of course) may have been a temporary lash-up.
