Prop block of ice wanted

Recommended Posts

Involved with a Frozen Jr production in a couple of months and been asked for a block of ice as a prop.

Now the obvious answer is to make up using a clear resin - not something I've had much to do with tbh - but if there's anyone who has something of this ilk in their props stores I'd be happy to talk turkey... 😄

(Before I start looking at DIY options)

One show I saw used clear poly bags, sort of part inflated with a layer (I  assume clear resin) inside it, I understand it was done in stages as the resin would settle to the bottom. In use they had a number of them variously illuminated with varying CW & blue (I assume LEDs) to create a glacier.

Depending on budget, what about a frame wrapped many times with cling film? (Clear pallet wrap)

you’d end up with a rough misshapen lump. Maybe a lampshade style frame or make one out of cheap acrylic

Please advise where one can get cheap acrylic? It seems to have at least trebled in price since pre pandemic. I paid under £170 for an 8x4 sheet of 10mm clear in 2019, The best I can find now is over £480. 😞

2018 I paid 6.99 for a 1x2m sheet of 3mm, same supplier is now £46 for 0.9x1.8m or 800% increase. In the same supplier red and yellow 4mm sheets of 0.3x1m £2.99, now 0.9x0.9 are £74.50 or 900% increase.

Not just me imagining it then? I was looking for the paperwork as I was working from memory. Those increases are much greater. 😠 Wish I'd bought more last time as I need some now.

I only know these as they sent out a 'valued customer' email quoting their current LOW PRICES for the products I purchased, I've made no effort to see if they are comparable with others but they were good 'back then'.

I've just checked the original invoice which was for 3mm red and yellow so potentially a higher price rise.

I've been reminded that the ice block needs to break in two at the right juncture, complicating things a little.

But I like the possible option of constructing an uneven pair of shapes that fit together to form a cube using the straws and connectors and wrapping with industrial cling wrap. And one of our members is a Tesco manager so can get the wrap, so half way there...
