Bad_Rock Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Hi. I'm supplying a new club with a Jbl sound system ( the one I asked if it's still on the level a few weeks ago on this forum). The place it's very small. So I put 2 Jbl's Vs 3115 (15"+8"+1!) tri amped and a mono sub Sp 128 ( 2x18" with 2242 components from Jbl). Both systems are original and sound great. But there is a little problem with a dj that spins in that club. I think he is bit deaf and also mixes like an amateur turning the volume up every time he changes each song. This monster it's running to be in the Guiness book as real horn killer. He blew both horns the first week end and after rebuilding them he blew them again. It is a small club and I don't have a big budget over there so I need to put a "great limiter" but very affordable. Is there any to suggest? I appreciate your help. Thanks.
blinding Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Roughly what size of budget are we talking about? If you are having to repair the drivers every week you could probably spec a decent one on the grounds of economy. Have a gander at the link below.Cheers http://www.cloud.co.uk/products/cx335.htm CX335 Compressor Limiter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FEATURES Virtually transparent operation. Intelligent 'split-band' control circuitry. Optimised for music & PA system protection. Built-in peak limiter for amplifier clip protection. Very easy to set up. Supplied with tamperproof security cover.
dfinn Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 How about the Behringer ultradrive pro. Crossover and limiter in one. Thanks, Daniel
Bad_Rock Posted July 12, 2005 Author Posted July 12, 2005 How about the Dbx PA ? I mean will the limit well?
IanG Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 The standard answer to this problem is the Aphex Dominator. In a locked case.
david.elsbury Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 How about a pointed stick, and a babysitter for the PA watching the meters... seriously, this may be the only way... DJs are clever beasts and will seek out and disable all that hinders them in pushing the PA as close to 160dB as they can....:D
mac.calder Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Recently used a behringer limiter, worked well. What about turning down the amps so that even on full gain, full vol, the thing will not blow. Then lock the amps in a cupboard. Or best yet - talk to management about this DJ, and then proposing that if said DJ does not learn how to DJ properly, and blows the horns, it comes out of his pay cheque.
Solstace Posted July 13, 2005 Posted July 13, 2005 To Bad_Rock - is there currently a monitor system in the booth? If so, has anyone taught the said DJ how to use it? If so and he really is that deaf, should he really be let loose in there un-accompanied? However you go about solving the rather delicate political/interpersonal problems you may face on the matter, from a technical perspective I'd suggest the DBX 260 Drive-rack will do what you're looking for, though it only has 6 outputs, so you may have to use another crossover for your subs (if you're not doing so already). At a push (in terms of budget), the Allen&Heath IDR8 would do what you're looking for, with 8 outputs as standard that could be configured to cater for stereo Sub, LF, MF and HF feeds. In response to other posts submitted so far... I agree with the idea of having words with the management. Without wishing to sound harsh, I would suggest that the solution of simply replacing drivers and docking the cost from the DJ's pay may seem reasonable, but if it's doing that much damage to the speakers, just think for a minute as to what damage it's doing to the punters! Something I've done before is to give my budding DJ a crash-course in gain structure (and seeing/hearing them correctly demonstrate it) before letting them loose on my system in a venue full of punters. Having done this, I've even resorted to getting them to sign a written agreement to the effect of them saying "I understand that *not* following the correct gain/volume procedures will result in my set and/or contract being immediately terminated, with no further redress".
cabletray Posted July 13, 2005 Posted July 13, 2005 Some one used to do a limiter with motorised pots you could set them internally the DJ would come along and change the settings then the unit turned back to the master settings DJs got tired of trying to change it :-) Another trick is to replace the pots with internal ones leaving the ones on the face of the unit as fake control play all day and no change but like any placebo some people can always hear a change after they set the unit.
Bad_Rock Posted July 13, 2005 Author Posted July 13, 2005 The Aphex it's too expensive. Didn't see the other yet. Must be something very very affordable. Sometimes in life there are affordable things that works very well. It is what I need right now. I think we can change the topic title for "the best and most affordable" speaker protector in the world or some. Thanks
