Gilly Posted July 8, 2005 Posted July 8, 2005 OK...I can fit more bantam jacks in the same amount of rack space, it works out cheaper using bantams over GPO jacks. What's the downside? This is for an upgrade to an existing system in a 400 seat receiving venue. Thoughts please.
Brian Posted July 8, 2005 Posted July 8, 2005 The downside with bantams is that the contact area is smaller so they may be more prone to noise once a bit of dirt/corrosion gets in. It's true that bantams are slightly cheaper (but not much) when you factor that they are twice as dense. The downside of any 1U panel, whether it is bantam or BPO is that the desi strip is much narrower than a 2U panel which makes them harder to read, especially in the dark. How much do you think you will be paying for panels?
Brian Posted July 8, 2005 Posted July 8, 2005 Bantam patch leads are also quite expensive<{POST_SNAPBACK}>True, about 20% more for 'proper' ones.
p.k.roberts Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 OK...I can fit more bantam jacks in the same amount of rack space, it works out cheaper using bantams over GPO jacks. What's the downside? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Having been the unwilling victim of many crackly bantam jackfields, I would advise avoiding them like the plague. They just seem to have no long term reliability (no matter how much Brasso you use on the double enders!)
charlyfarly Posted July 9, 2005 Posted July 9, 2005 I concur! Go for the GPO's. I am still traumatised from the grief of using a bantam patch on a Midas XL3!
robloxley Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Less space for terminating bantams than GPOs, but then I'd suggest going for one of the 'easy-terminate' patchbays - with quick normalling links - these days.
paulears Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 and repairing the tighter packed bantams is hell on earth if you have big fingers!
