eldar Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Hello all I am seeking some advice and hoping somebody reading/ floating on this forum can help. I asked the company fitting out my new arts centre to provide me with 1000w fresnel lanterns. What I have is a lantern called THT 1000, but with no other markings or makers name. I don't mind that this is probably a cheap version of a branded lantern. However... The lamp inside the lantern is a 500w, possibly a T18 as it looks identical to the ones I have in my 500w Minuette fresnels. I was expecting a 1000w lamp, or am I wrong is this assumption. Can someone please tell me if this is normal or should there be a 1000w lamp inside it to make it a 1000w lantern? Please advise me if this is normal, before I go and get funny at the company who is suppling me. Am I being conned or am I ignorant of how these things work? Thankseldar
johnhuson Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 Certainly doesn't sound normal to me, if it's a 1Kw fixture then it should have a T19 in it, or a T29 if it's a 1.2K. If it does have a T18 or T25 in it then the lamp holder will also be wrong. Also a T18/T25 is a smaller lamp so the centre of the filament will not be in line with the centre of the reflector so light output will also be incorrect. I would suggest you get onto the company that supplied them and find out whats going on.
Bryson Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 First of all, get them to tell you exactly who manufactures the lantern you're getting. You're buying it, there should be no secret. If you specified 1000w lanterns, then that includes fitting a 1000w lamp. Simple as that.
gareth Posted July 6, 2005 Posted July 6, 2005 I agree with John - if you spec'ed 1000w lanterns, and the suppliers supplied lanterns marked up as being 1000w units, it's perfectly reasonable for you to expect them to fit 1000w lamps. Having said that, it sounds like they've supplied you with the wrong kind of lantern - 500w/650w T-class theatre lamps have a GY9.5 base, whereas 1000w/1200w versions have a GX9.5 base - one is not interchangeable with the other, so if your lanterns currently have 500w lamps in them chances are that's what they're designed to take. In short, then, if you specified 1000w lanterns and your suppliers sent you 500w ones ... 1. It sounds like they're trying to pull a fast one ; 2. If these are the same issues that you first reported in this topic from almost two months ago, how come it's taken you so long to get around to sorting it out?! Edit : actually, reading the other topic again, it seems that you were aware at that time that the lanterns were 500w units ("It says on it that it takes a GX 9.5 220/240 500w Halogen lamp", you said). So how come you're still expecting to find 1000w lamps when you open the units up? Sorry, I don't mean to come across as unhelpful and unsympathetic, you clearly have issues with the suppliers of your equipment because it seems that they ignored a pretty important part of your instructions - but if this issue has been around for so long, shouldn't it be sorted by now? If I were you, and I discovered that I'd been supplied with completely the wrong equipment, I'd be on the phone to the supplier on a daily basis until it was sorted.
eldar Posted July 6, 2005 Author Posted July 6, 2005 Cheers for your help everybody, I've just dragged a lantern down from my rig and it does look like the company is trying to take advantage of the fact that the fresnels 'look' like 1000's and say THT 1000 on them, but they by the sound of it are not the lanterns I asked for. I'm not looking forward to telling the company that I've discovered they have made a 'mistake' even though I have been using the lanterns for 6 months.I never made the connection about the lamp spec saying 500w until today which is why this topic started -I'm still trying to put 2 and 2 together but I thought it didn't sound right. As for the comments on why this is taking me so long to sort, I'm only a part time technician at the arts centre because I also run the music dept tech for the college that manages the centre. I do two jobs in one job description and it's always the arts centre that looses out. I'm coming up to the summer hols where I can finally get some work done at the centre! (if you look at my posts there's a very long topic on how I was doing FAR too many hours - that got sorted when I felt I may have to leave due to exhaustion - by pulling me out of the centre and putting me in the music dept almost full time.) THANK YOU all for your help and advice. This forum keeps me sane some days! Eldar
