Techie Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 Now I know most of you out there that have used colourmag scrollers may have no doubt found them unreliable and definitley noisy. Thankfully I have overcome those two problems with my own modifications but have one more challenge to overcome. I own and use one of the original controllers for the scrollers and now wish to make a DMX converter. (law of the odds says the original controller will die at some point). What I am after and I accept this may be a long shot is to see if anyone has any idea on the data packet format used by the controller. From my investigations into the hardware I can tell a UART is not used and that the data signal is bit bashed. Any help in trying to solve this challenge will be greatly appreciated.
timmath Posted June 29, 2005 Posted June 29, 2005 There were DMX-ColourMag interfaces on the LSD website in the used kit section, it may be worth giving them a shout to see if they have may left... IIRC the data the desk sends is command based RS232, ie only commands are sent to scrollers not a continuous stream of data like DMX No point re-inventing the wheel! Regards Tim(ColourMag DMX interface user!)

If I have no luck it will be out with the sampling oscilloscope and logic analyser.
whitevanman Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 I've got a pdf of the protocol spec if you need it. Drop me a line and I'll get it sent to you ! Regards Mark
TAFFY Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Morning, I know I'm opening and old thread here but I have recently found some ColourMag scrollers and controller... and all the bits and bobs to go with, but can not get the desk to work So if anyone has any ideas please let me know.Everything powers up ok but the LED displays on the desk are a bit faint. I have the PSU's x 4Scollers X8 (I think)CablesDesk that switches on but I can’t work out how to use <_<
Robertdazzler Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 I've got a pdf of the protocol spec if you need it. Drop me a line and I'll get it sent to you ! Regards Mark Hi Mark Your post of 2005 says you have the protocols of ColourMag. I have just acquired a set of these with a fault in the DMX aspect of the power pack. this looks like a home built bit of circuitry with a microprocessor at its heart. The processor seems to have a hardware fault as it gives no output but does indicate a DMX512 signal is being received. If you still have and can email me the protocol I may be able to program another IC or at least better understand how to solve this one.

I note that back in 2006 you had 4 such units. have you still got these and would you be prepared to sell me one of them? I have the manuals and operating instructions for ColourMag desks which I will gladly share with you.
