cafc-dan Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 A youth theatre group have consulted me, asking if they can get this annoying start up movement off their small scanners (disco). I've searched around the net, but I can't find anything. Their called Geni Mojo Scan I's. When they start up (fader from the strand 200 board, (Its their board, so I've provided them with a DJ DMX Controler to make it easy for them) the mirror starts ticking to one side and a red and white light comes in from either side, this happens on all 4 so I guess its a warm up for all four. Have you guys got any ideas. Its a 3 pin DMX so theres no fader on the DMX controler.
James Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 I have never worked with a robotic light that doesn't have a "warm up routine" or calibration, power on self test routine. To be honest I wouldn't want to use one that didn't - and why would you? I have used Mojo scans with Strand 200 desk before and had no problems. James PS I have no idea what Its a 3 pin DMX so theres no fader on the DMX controler means
James Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 If I understand you correctly and you meant Its a 3 pin DMX so theres no master fader on the DMX controler then I still have no idea what you mean. Sorry James
david.elsbury Posted June 26, 2005 Posted June 26, 2005 Perhaps he's talking about the DJ-style controller that he's given them to use in the meantime? And if it is a start - up routine, then the only thing you can do is to physically block the light out from the mirror by using a shutter or something- or a peice of cardboard/blackwrap on a string in front of it... basically tough luck, sorry.David
cafc-dan Posted June 26, 2005 Author Posted June 26, 2005 Yeah any way guys thanks for you help, guess I've gotta break the news to them :)
Bad_Rock Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 I'm an unhappy owner of 4 Mojo scans from Geni the ones with 24v 250w lamp. To make it quick is just a regular dj scanner. The good points might be that are really light. And you change lamp for a very few bucks. After that... only 3 channels, bad movement, old school gobos and about brightness you better don't use them in more than 3m heights.
cafc-dan Posted June 27, 2005 Author Posted June 27, 2005 The scanners are the most nosiest I've come across, the movement is very slow as Bad_Rock said. I feel sorry for the youth theatre using them.
Guest mattladkinlx Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 They were never designed for theatre use. They are a DJ scanner as said in product spec - no dimmer, 8-bit movement, no seperate colour gobo wheels etc. If you get the discharge wersion they are great, but the halogen versions arent as good (for optics anyway!). They arent that slow movement wise just depends what setting you have them on (I think last dip switch!)
Thirdtap Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 'loAre they not wanting the start up routine thingy because they are spilling light on the stage?Does this mean that they are switching the units on during a performance before their cues? Got to ask this 'cos I found one group switching the comms system on and off between cues due to the fact 'they did not need it for the whole of the show!!!'Of course the easiest would be to get them to switch on at the start of the show. Or if it is doing it before every cue maybe keep the lights on a preset cue on a submaster?
cafc-dan Posted June 27, 2005 Author Posted June 27, 2005 I have no idea how their using them, I just hired them out to them, I got them off ebay about 3 years ago.
Jamtastic3 Posted June 28, 2005 Posted June 28, 2005 I've got 4 Mojo Scan 1's and to be honest, I quite like them.I used them for a dance and rock show on a school stage and they were used as the main effect lighting. Some of the gobos are dodgy (classic windows gobo - vile!) but the light output I thought was brill for halogen. Loads of smoke helps! Thanks mattladkinlx for pointing out there are 8bit steppers - I thought that cos they jitter a bit in complicated looped chases. Check out these 2 pics from the dance show:http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/Jamez3uk/42cbb78e.bmp http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/Jamez3uk/274b09c7.bmp Soz back to the point - Sounds like the scans are doing their usual tilt and pan into reset position and will spill light when reseting if not DMX and strobe when reseting if DMX. The only way to overcome this is turn your scans on before the show starts. And if you're using a DMX board, when the faders (including master) is 0% they should all go to a reset position (no light output when this happens) Since we are on a Mojo Scan convo, does anyone know where to buy Mojo Scan 2 (sep gobo and colour wheels)??? Maplin only do the first in the series.

It might also be worth looking at Mojo Scan 3, although without looking it up, I can't remember what the difference is between them now!

The difference between the scanner 2 and 3 is that the 2 has separate gobo and colour wheel the scanner 3 has rotating gobos but no separate colour wheel. ;) Unnecessary quoting of entire posts removed. If you're replying to one question in a longer post, DON'T QUOTE THE WHOLE POST! Just quote the bit that you're replying to. It makes a topic harder to read, it wastes bandwidth, and it annoys us.
electronicsuk Posted December 16, 2005 Posted December 16, 2005 I also seem to remember seeing some of the Geni range on JP leisure. Re the brightness of the mojo scans, I've heard they use some form of halogen capsule lamp and reflector rather than an A1/259, which doesn't help the optics or brightness very much.
