All the gas does is stops the carbonised filiment depisiting itself on the glass

The lamp ran for maybe a minute or two without glass - probably not enough time for any effect from fresh air to occur.

I thought the glass envalope had no oxygen and tungsten would just burn athe the temperature it gets to in a lamp if oxygen was present.

If these are halogen lamps, then the inner "bubble" containing the filament does not appear to be what blew - just the outer shell. As such, the filaments conditions would not change, and they would continue to run fine . . .

Hi All

It is interesting to note that TMB sell GE CP60, CP61 but sell a Radium CP62.

Or at least they did last week when I bought some.

Were any of the blown bulbs CP62's?

If so I would contact your supplier again.

I remembered seeing this post ages ago but it was my turn tonight. Guess I'm just hitting the bad batch now. Two G/E Superpar bubbles exploded on me over stage during the show sending fragments of glass onto the stage. Was anyone in touch with G/E regarding this and if so what was the response? Out with the camera tomorrow to document it. Same symptoms though. Lens intact but separated from the reflector which was shattered.

Have you contacted your supplier or perhaps GE direct to see if there is a problem with a bad batch or something? Sometimes happens... I'm following this closely, because I've just lamped our cans with GE super PAR lamps....

I'm quoting myself, as a bit of a follow up. We did use the cans, eventually, and funnily enough I had 3 lamps with failures. One was that the lug had seperated from the entry to the bubble, underneath the ceramic.

And the other two were lens seperating from the reflector....... :P

We returned them to GE direct, as the supplier (who shall not be named) basically said "stuff you, we have had no problems with GE lamps. Chinese imports yes, GE no."

And they got replaced.

No others yet... touch wood....

I have also had the mis fortune of having a lamp explode within an hour of being put in, luckily this was about an hour before a performance was due to take place with people walking around with no shoes on. doesnt bear thinking about really!! returned lamp to supplier no questions and then changed suppliers to stage lx and problems since. :P

Aoife - I've recently returned some of my Superpar CP62 lamps to my supplier and had them replaced due the to the lens shattering and seperating from reflector issue, if your supplier is worth their salt they should replace them with no problems.

Apparantly, from what I can gather, this issue only affects the early batchs and there shouldn't be any problems now but it would seem there are still people out there having issues - obviously working thru old lamp stocks.

If you get an official response from GE, I'd be very interested to hear it!

Cheers,

Stu

I have also had the same thing happen to me on two occasions this year with Superpars both CP62. Lamps were on FOH booms, luckily not overhead otherwise we could have been in an awkward situation!

Not had any exploding lamps, but have had pars disintergrating on failure i.e. the lens cracking into pieces and coming away from the reflector. Seems to be happening more often at the moment, but not been looking at the make of our par lamps, will now! spares are osram thankfully.
