Oversized 7-segment display

Recommended Posts

WS2815 is a current hog even when dark due to the way it works, bypasses LEDs out via fet.

WS2813 is the 5V backup data device, no external capacitor that the 2812 has.

Tape can have it`s challenges permanently outdoors getting temp cycled, think solder fails or wire bond failure on really cheap LEDs, but do think the days of all but the cheapest failing easily are generally past.

5V tape will light on 4.2V of Li-Ion, think 18650.

No brand neutral cure silicone ,gunned out of a tube.

I got four sizes of digit wired up on a board for checking visibility over distance...

Got to take it outside now and stand 200m away from it.

I imagine the last segment will be the one chosen but it isn’t really viable to battery power.

I guess 888 for 8 in the 88th over will not happen very often!

For random numbers, it averages at just under 5 segments lit per digit at a time, but for cricket, the hundreds digit is going to be off or showing 1 for a significant amount of the time. The 1st innings total will also be off for half the match I assume.

Could you use a light meter to reduce brightness in dull conditions?

Would a solar panel or two help a little on a bright day? unsure.gif

The power draw for the double width segment (for 9 figures) is about 23A max, or 17A with average 5 segments on

It's pretty high current draw for a leisure battery giving only 3-4 hours to 50% discharge.

I think we'll have to review if it needs mains power, or put a bank of batteries on the field fed from a solar panel to recharge during the week rather than mounting the battery on the sign.

(The sign may be installed compared to portable yet) - but we can easily change displays and which text is interpreted from the app.
