James Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 Plus a lot of BBC Fx is hired for purpose and a lot is hammered by overuse. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What do you mean by this statement? James <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Maybe he means they can't sell some of the FX kit (moving lights?) because it isn't their's to sell, as it was hired for an event. Thats how I read it anyway.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> It was more the "a lot is hammered by overuse" statement that irritated me. Does "jivemaster" have reason to believe that we abuse hired equipment? James
Ben... Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 BBC Technology doesn't exist anymore (now part of Seimens Business Services)<{POST_SNAPBACK}>But we do still de-commision stuff :** laughs out loud **:A lot of stuff that we take out is sold or given internally to the poorer bits outside London. Of what's left, quite a bit goes to an approved contractor, the name of whom I forget, who essentially bungs it all on eBay. Some gets sold overseas to avoid scam issues. A very small amount gets given to charities. As far as I can tell, shows that use kit above what is in the studios often hire for the duration. Permanent stuff is, like James says, used until it's unrepairable, or is farmed out round the country. BBC Nations and Regions are so fragmented anyway that I would have no Idea where to start....I think with the regions the situation is 'from their cold dead hands'.
the kid Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 So in theory if you wanted you could write a nice letter and possibly get a lot for a college/school as charity?

And then they'd have to be willing to take on the extra work of going through the ordeal of getting you approved as someone to give stuff to. By all means try, but to be honest you'd probably do better trying independent TV companies who don't have all the public cash issues, or trying for retired hire kit.
