alexwindeatt Posted May 8, 2019 Posted May 8, 2019 Can a parcan be upside down with the cable coming out of the top? Or will it damage the fixture?
alistermorton Posted May 8, 2019 Posted May 8, 2019 Pars can be used in any orientation although obviously watch where the heat is going.
themadhippy Posted May 8, 2019 Posted May 8, 2019 upside down ,on its side, inside out the dam things will still work, just keep the cable away from the hot bits and all will be good, get the wire too close to the hot bits and youll get a funny smell and eventually either a dark can or a big BANG can
nuttytechy Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 The trusting Parcan... Yes I am a Par Fanboy ** laughs out loud **. It can be used in any orientation because of their design. Basically its just a lamp held in by a huge circlip with the lamp holder in the back going into the lamp. No matter which way you put them, those things will still work. Just keep the cable away from the hot parts.
vinntec Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Can a parcan be upside down with the cable coming out of the top? Or will it damage the fixture? The power cable on a parcan comes out the back. The lamp itself is a single sealed unit containing both light source and reflector. A real parcan can be used any which way as long as you look after the cables v hot parts. If the lantern you are looking at has the power cable coming out of the top or bottom, you might be looking at something else where the top of the lamp is away from the cable - in which case the orientation will matter. Can you post a photo or look what it says on the lantern regarding make and model if you are not 100% certain that what you have is a parcan?
Seano Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Just to add to the above - if there's a gel frame, you want to avoid that dropping out too.
timsabre Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 The power cable on a parcan comes out the back. Not really - comes out one side of the rear housing. So can come out of the "top" or the "bottom".
Stuart91 Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Although some Par 56 models do have the cable coming out of the back, and the OP hasn't been clear which exact type of lantern he's working with. Most of the problems I've come across with Parcans haven't been to do with heat and cables, but rather failure of some kind at the gland. Either the gland coming away from the lantern shell, or the cable insulation breaking at the point where it flexes.
paulears Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Even the ones I have with PARSafes, have the cable emerging from the dome, top or bottom. Don't think I have any where the cable comes out of the lamp connector into the outside world?
