loudwill Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 Hi Guys & Gals, Just a quick one, has anyone had any first hand experience with either the Cumulus or Cloud 9 from Chauvet? We are looking at getting a low fogger and these two models seem to by quite reasonable for the price. We would mainly be using them in small to medium sized venues, (150 seat to 1k capacity). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. ThanksW
ImagineerTom Posted December 16, 2018 Posted December 16, 2018 I’ve made a few posts in the past on the technology. Compared to other heavy fog systems they are significantly cheaper than other technologies and produce similar quantities and qualities of smoke. Problems with this technology boil down to them not being tippable and having to be emptied / cleaned whenever you want to move them and there being no long term durability experience so lifespan is an unknown. They have all the same problems that other heavy fog systems have - the airflow and temperature in your room (which varies from show to show no matter how you try to control it) can make or break the effect as can performers running through the fog. This low fog is slightly more durable than regular fog-chilled systems but still not dry ice levels of durability. Everyone I know using this technology is using double the number of units specifically so they have the spare capacity to cope with draughty performances.
Stuart91 Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 For the sort of size venues that the OP is going into, do you think that multiple small machines will be more effective than one larger one?
ImagineerTom Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 Multiple machines is ALWAYS the solution because if you have one machine ducted centre stage then a slight draught will give you a half empty stage. Multiple machines means multiple origination points which gives you more compensation for draughty. The op hasn’t stated venue size in a meaningful way. I know a 150 seat venue that has an 8x8m stage. I know 1000 seat venues that have a 5m stage. Stating seating capacity tells us nothing about the size or format of the stage so I ignored it.

I should of stated stage sizes, apologies!!! Stage sizes will vary from 6x6m - 20 x 15m ThanksW
ImagineerTom Posted December 17, 2018 Posted December 17, 2018 The point still stands, multiple machines are needed to counteract air flows (which will change from performance to performance on the same stage) you might just get away with a single unit on the smallest stage but on a 20 x 15 you’d been looking at 3-4 units regardless of what technology you chose if you want to produce a consistent low hanging fog effect
