TomHoward Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Apologies for the early-ish Festive question with it not quite being December but; Has anyone seen a modular christmas tree setup for municipal / community use where a large Christmas tree is made of many small trees mounted on a frame or similar? Apparently this is a known thing but I can't find any pictures of any examples. I'm thinking something like a fake christmas tree setup where you stick individual branches on, but using multiple 6-8' trees in maybe four or five rings / canopies to make one overall large tree.Assuming the central frame would be welded with some like of receiver for each tree. I'm basing this on someone having described one to me, but can't find any original pictures of if the idea works.
ImagineerTom Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Most big commercial fake trees consist of a metal cone sub structure then branches attached to it. I can see how to a muggle that would look like a big tree made up of lots of small trees.
TomHoward Posted November 27, 2018 Author Posted November 27, 2018 Sounds like that could be the case - I can't work out whether even conceptually the idea of multiple trees would work, whether it would look anything like a large tree at all, or even if it didn't if it would still work when dressed, or the whole idea is terrible.
Gerry Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 I am fairly sure that I have seen one. Can't rember where or when.It was a welded construction with holders that held smaller trees.Arranged such that the smaller trees looked like branches on a very much larger tree.CheersGerry

Gerry Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 Did it look any good, either like a real tree, or still looked okay even though it didn't look like a real tree?Didn't look like a real tree but it looked OK and a clever idea of using smaller trees. How real it would look would depend on the complexity of the steel structure and how many trees where used.CheersGerry
TomHoward Posted November 28, 2018 Author Posted November 28, 2018 Cheers The man idea behind it is we're looking at a way of lighting one in sections. Using many smaller trees might make the lighting easier as I can wrap each smaller tree first and have a circuit per small tree, rather than trying to divide a big tree up into sections. (And cost..)Might mock up one side with a few small ones and see how it goes.
ImagineerTom Posted November 28, 2018 Posted November 28, 2018 you'd be using thousands of wasted lights and dozens of dimmer channels needlessly all whilst trying to re-invent the christmas tree Either just hang the lights on the big tree in zones or use your favourite smart pixel LED systems - there's even consumer versions out there now where you just take a photo of your tree and it automatically maps the positions and gives you touch control.
