spencerm Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 I currently work in IT but freelance in live events, mainly in a video production capacity but wish to do more sound and light, and eventually wish to work in this field full time in the future. I'm looking at various certificates etc that I can do to improve my knowledge and currently have the following list. IPAF 1aIPAF 3aIPAF 3bEvent Safety PassportCSCS CardAvolites Academy L1 + 2ETC ION Does anyone have any other suggestions please? http://www.blue-room.org.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif
Charlotte_R Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 I'm in a similar position. I've just done IPAF - 3a and 3b are probably the most useful, but I did 1b as well (not 1a, nobody I spoke to offered 1a) and that covers push around vertical. I wouldn't have, but it was cheap to add it on at the same time as 3a+b. I've also just done working at height covering work positioning and bought a harness, etc.You might also want to look into BS7909, which allows you to be in charge of various aspects of temporary electrical installation.
peza2010 Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 If your looking to expand on audio, you could look at.. L'Acoustics Level 1 and Level 2 D&B training None of the above with automatically get you more work though. To be honest, don't get bogged down with too much training its more a case of doing more shows, networking with the right people - what you have already done is good grounding. For example - from above I know you've done the Avo Training - but that doesn't tell me that your a good LD or operator - when someone I work with regularly recommends you, then I know your up for the task. There is of course some training that will get you up the ladder (Claire A1/A2) - but your unlikely to even be able to get that training without going round the block a couple of times. Where are you based? - its a good time of year to find new freelancing work because industry goes boom at this time of year - its just a case of touching base with a few companies.
Jivemaster Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Training is for the end of winter when the work is sparse and you can take time off! First Aid at Work never hurt anyone -can be useful. 7909 training will certainly help if you keep it up to date. Perhaps a driving licence to bigger vans - stays with you for life. But it's work that gets you more work.

ninjadingle Posted November 8, 2018 Posted November 8, 2018 If you're in IT I'd be looking at more generic AV qualifications - the two are merging more into each other every day. Courses such as AVIXA CTS are industry recognised and great if you want to learn more about video / projection, though it is more for installs. Their basic course is also quite good, though can be pricey if your organisation is not a member of AVIXA. Also anything that's free - most of the sound companies run free training sessions as do the lampies (did Avolites Titan training years ago - think it costs a tenner now) - d&b audio acoustics is well worth doing to give a good basic grasp on sound principles. Otherwise get out there, listen to what's being said and done, apply the BS filter a little and you should be ok...
