mrford
I need to use EL Wire (or the best equivalent?) to create a light up sign for an upcoming production. What is the best way to do this?As always we are on a limited budget and any help would be greatly appreciated.. Can I simply plug it into the dimmer or do I need to do some work on it? Ynot
EL wire controller tend to be non-DMX in my experience (though will stand to be corrected). They are not dimmable in the traditional way - more that they're on/off or strobable via bespoke controllers. You can control those controllers maybe from a switchable DMX source, or from a dimmer set to switch, but that MAY be your only option. Jivemaster
IIRC EL wire is powered from an audio frequency source. Whether a DMX control module exists...
maeterlinck
We've have success PWM dimming the inverter before. It's not perfect but works. There are DMX inverters available as well, but much harder to come by and more expensive (at least the ones I've seen).HTH
mrford
DMX Inverters seem quite an investment.. at over £200 with the AC Adapter..Can I just plug the EL Wire into a 15A>13A jumper straight into the dimmer and set it Non-Dim on the desk? alistermorton
RC4/Theatre Wireless used to demo dimming EL wire using one of their ac bridge units and a (small) transformer under (wireless) DMX control. Could be worth looking into? Lamp & Pencil are the importers.
andy_s
driver information no connection with company, no recommendation implied, just an example of how information can be found through google.
timsabre
I would look at "led neon" (Google it) instead of el wire which is fragile and not very bright. The LED stuff is thicker tube but a lot brighter and more options for driving.
