BobJ
We have a small stage with about 30 LED lamps of different types plus 3 long throw LED ellipse (ADJ 1000 Encores) and are interested in trying some light modelling ( to look for lighting surfaces and shadows etc) before hanging/aimin. There are a lot of programs out their, some of them very sophisticated and a surprising number from Europe. We are all volunteer but don't mind paying for something that will accommodate our very modest needs. However, a lot of these have features we'll never use. Anyone using such and can assist here? Thank you.
DonkiDonki
Please could you provide one or two examples of what you would like to achieve, this will help narrow down which software to consider?
BobJ
Please could you provide one or two examples of what you would like to achieve, this will help narrow down which software to consider? Yes; We have a single bar over the proscenium and a bar at the back of the small theatre (about 40' away). We normally have 6 Chauvet CORE 80 Pars and 3 40's plus the three ADJ Encore 1000 ellipsoids on the back bar.Really would like to create a 3D model (not tied to any console or other DMX program \) that will allow me to put a figure or shape on the stage and then a lamp on the bar and aim it to see the shadows. The idea is to experiment up-front how many lamps to use, their position and which way to aim them. Thank you for you interest
timsabre
Capture Sweden would be great for this - has a free demo download (fully functional but you can't save) and is not too expensive if you decide to buy.
DonkiDonki
I also recommend Capture, the single DMX universe (solo) version is about the cheapest option and the lighting simulation capabilities are ideal for what you are doing. There are a few versions now, 2018 being the current release. I believe that is currently about 400 euro from their website though you might want to try some distributors as they sometimes discount. There are other packages out there but this one is hard to beat for the price point.

Still - have it now and starting to learn how to use it.We're going to be putting gone "Moon For The Misbegotten" and I would really like to get some deep 'mood' lighting on the small stage ( 30' x 25')We only have a chalk line bar for lights and a bar about 25' down the auditorium. So, making some tall poles to put some LED washes either side up stage to bring on some back lightingThank you again
BobJ
Amazing! To finish this topic off - I installed "Capture" and came up to speed very quickly. Was totally blasted out of my chair when I ran QLCPlus (a very firm favorite of mine) at the same time. And, having seen that term "Art-Net" mentioned set QLC+ output to it.VOILA! I could now operate my lights (live) in "Capture" from within QLC+. I thought all of these things were complicated to set up and when it worked straight off was pleasantly surprised. Great combination.
