LD Systems U500 Series Wireless Mics?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with the LD Systems U500 series wireless microphones?

Sadly I missed out on some Sennheiser XSW65's that Thomann were clearing out for £180 before the new v2 came in.

There are a few very positive German reviews online, The mic has interchangeable capsules (dynamic/condenser/cardioid/hypercardioid, decent range of 100m and from the reviews sounds very good. They start off at £266 for the handheld dynamic and £286 for the condenser.

decent range of 100m

Take that with a large pinch of salt.

But if you're just using it within the confines of a typical stage you should be fine.

Yes agreed. I never take manufacture specs to be the same in real world usage.

I'm pretty torn between getting one of these mics or saving for a while longer and get a Sennheiser XSW-2 865. They are about £120 more from my local supplier but the Sennheiser's receiver has a metal case vs the plastic one for the LD U500 set. Not sure how they compare audio quality wise or wireless reliability?

The original XS range always felt a bit "plasticky" to me. I never had any complaints about the audio quality, but for hire use I don't think they'd hold together for long enough. For an individual artist taking their own system around with them, it would be fine, and the new XSW-1 hits that target quite effectively. The XSW-2 range seems like a significant improvement compared to its predecessor, but as you say, there's a cost.

Either system is fine. (I'm a Sennheiser dealer but do also sell some LD kit). What's going to be right for you boils down to how you will use it. If the system is likely to see some rough treatment then the extra for the XSW-2 may well be a wise investment.

I will be mainly using the wireless system for speeches. From what I can tell both the LD Systems U508HHD and Sennheiser XSW-2 865 use plastice casing for the mics and metal casing for the receivers (though the LD Systems U508 mic has a rubbery coating aswell). I can't really tell what advantages the Sennheiser XSW-2 series has over the LD U500 series!? I guess it will come down to which has the best audio quality and wireless reliability along with lowest handling noise and highest pop rejection?

Quick update. I've managed to get an extremely good deal on a secondhand Audio Technica ATW-3141a. It was very to be up and running and the range seems to be very good.

I use the ATW-3171b condenser regularly at a venue I run sound and it has always been very reliable and sounds good. Last night I was able to go into this venue to a/b the mics. The first thing I noticed is the ATW-T141a dynamic mic has a little more handling noise than ATW-T171b condenser. Also, the condenser naturally sounded more detailed and brighter by comparison. I'm not sure if the handling noise on the ATW-T141a is enough to be an issue? I've read a few reviews of the LD U508HHD and one of the negatives is the handling noise so I'm not sure if this will be an improvement over the Audio Technica ATW-141a!? I've contacted Adam Hall regarding this mic and they said the dynamic capsule has lower handling noise than the condenser capsule. I've also spoken to a dealer who has tried both the LD U508HHD and Sennheiser XSW2-865 and they found the Sennheiser condenser had higher handling noise than the LD Dynamic. If this is the case, I think I'd be better off keeping what I've got and maybe add the Audio Technica ATW-T171b condenser at a later date?
