Ear Plugs

I recently did a gig with a band I work for and due to the lay out of the pub I had to situate myself and the sound desk right infront of the speaker.. and boy did I know about it for the next two days!

 

I think we may be playing this venue as a regular gig now which concerncs me. although I dont want to miss out on the work I certainly dont wanna f*ck up my heairng before im 20!

 

basically I was wondering if wearing earplugs will a). help save me from going deaf and b). reduce my ability to mix properly?

Seriously, there is a recent thread on the subject of plugs, but mixing from in front of the speaker won't give you (with or without earplugs) any idea of what it really sounds like.
