Mr Steve
Hello, I need some enlightenment - What is 'the done thing' when it comes to needing to extend scaff tube when used with a tank trap? If I have two 2m pieces of scaff, and want to join them to make a 4m length and hang a parcan or small fresnel off the top, for example, is it acceptable to use a coupler (either internal joint pin, or external with those grub screws)? Or is the answer to buy a single solid piece of scaff tube? Thanks
ImagineerTom
It's so cheep just buy a single length. You can use in-line joints and with just a single Light on top it wouldn't be an issue structurally but there would be a little wobble and you'd probably spend as much on the coupler as it would cost to just buy the correct length single piece. J Pearce
Assuming you can fit a 4m length in your van. Worth doing the single piece if you can, if you have to join I've found the external couplers, or using two swivels with an overlap, gives less wobble than the internal couplers. peza2010
Also have a look at scaff extensions from the likes of doughty. Then you have variable height - and can attach your light using a "TV spiggot"
TomHoward
As described the internal couplers wobble a bit, and as they are based on the internal wall diameter they don't always fit well with Ali tube because of the thicker wall, once they are done up they can get stuck in one side and need hammering out. TomHoward
Just realised the external couplers you are talking of are Keyclamps with those grub screws, there's another type which wraps over which may be more sturdy We buy them from SGB and they are pretty cheap. As mentioned though a single length is better, although we cut everything to 3m max as that's all fits in the van.http://smithshire.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Scaffolding-Sleeve-Coupler.jpg
