lonemorf Posted October 2, 2016 Posted October 2, 2016 OK, I get that, but Im not clear on one thing. If I have a 3 miniscans all showing 5amp+ and want to put them on a 13amp supply, irrespective of the power factor, am I going to blow that 13amp supply?Lastly, If I choose not to do a 2R conversion on these units, how would I calculate the cap needed, and exactly where would it sit. Would I also need inrush limiters? Oh, and sorry for the thread hijack, but it goes to show that the OP isnt the only person looking upgrade fixtures for a variety of reasons :)

Oh, and sorry for the thread hijack, but it goes to show that the OP isnt the only person looking upgrade fixtures for a variety of reasons :)If you draw 5 amps with each fixture then yes, with three of the same that's 15A which is overloading a 13A supply by 2A. In reality, assuming that 13A supply is protected by a BS1362 13A fuse (in the plug) then you will almost certainly not blow that fuse, as they can carry more than the nominal rating of 13A for quite a long time before blowing. The mains lead would get quite warm though! In terms of adding correction caps, I think a bit of research would be needed - I know about the issues of power factor and how to take it into account when designing power circuits and distribution, but I'm no expert in the implementation of PF correction in appliances. In theory it is a case of adding a capacitor (mains rated and non-polar of course) across the mains going in to the unit, but I'd advise you do a fair bit of research and check your insurance policy before attempting a DIY job!

Will pull the schematic and take a looky EDIT: Nope, no PFC built in as standard..............bummer. EDIT2: http://www.blue-room...ndpost&p=426176Full of win! Time to research that a bit more! EDIT3: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/polypropylene-film-capacitors/4515461/ should do it, but would rather a metal cased one I think
gyro_gearloose Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 If you plan on converting your Miniscans to LED, have a look at my post from a few years ago. I've sold the first two converted scans, and have made and assembled the plastic parts for two more. You'd just need to add a heatsink, an LED, and the supply to drive it.
lonemorf Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 I have read that thread many times - it is totally inspiring.
