Channel characteristics and Grand Master

In desk I usually use, if I change channel characteristics, it is applied after Grand Master (submasters/que etc. levels -> GM -> dimmer curves-> DMX), but yesterday I found desk working other way: GM is applied after channel characteristics change (submasters/que etc. levels -> dimmer curves -> GM -> DMX).

Which way is more popular amongst DMX controllers?

channel characteristics == dimmer curves.

I'm afraid you're going to have to explain that more clearly. What do you mean by "channel characteristics"? What do you mean by them being applied before/after the grand master?

Do you mean dimmer curves, or patch level?

In that case, it's usually applied at the very end of the chain - memories/subs/channels >> GM >> Patch info >> DMX output(s).

However, the GM usually doesn't affect channels/curves/whatever that are intended to be used for aspects of fixtures other than brightness - colour scrolls, mover position/gobo/strobe/whatever and the like.
