Active full range cabs

Hello

I'm currently using a pair of RCF Art 300 and a Chevin A2000 amp for small disco duties one night a week.

The Art 300s are great mid top cabs but are always somewhat lacking in the LF dept.

I'm considering getting some active 15s but am not sure what to get .. I'm not your typical DJ and also use them for various PA duties and require something of good quality by a well known respected brand.

I am looking to spend upto £800 if possible and would consider 2nd hand too.

I'm looking for a decent pair of 15s that I can use in venues full range playing in a high ceiling venue upto 120 people without the Need of Bass Bins.

I'm thinking of Active but am not 100 percent convinced that it is a requirement?

Any suggestions ?

I'd suggest auditioning Yamaha DXR15s but they are over budget at around £580 a box. The new Alto TS215As might be worth a try too but are significantly less powerful than the DXRs. I reckon the DXRs at least will be an upgrade on your ART300 but maybe a single 15" sub to add o your current rig would be more cost effective and versatile?

Yes I'd also recommend the DXR15's. I use these without subs on some gigs and run bass and kick drum through them successfully. The FBT X-Lite 15a's would also be worth an audition. I have a pair of the X-Lite 12a's and the the depth of bass and output these have is extremely impressive given their size!

The RCF ART300 speakers you already have seem to be a standard with mobile DJs, probably because they are quite light, compact to transport and are relatively inexpensive.... therefore probably worth sticking with!

Rather than trading them in for a pair of 15" powered boxes, which will be noticeably more bulky and considerably heavier, have you considered buying a single, small but efficient powered sub instead? The dbtechnologies SUB12D comes to mind... we have sold quite a few of these to DJs and they love them. One of those with your existing 12" RCFs will give you the LF extension you're looking for, take up no more room in your car, cost a lot less than your budget and give you more flexibility.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies... the sub idea is a good one . But I really want to downsize and do away with the separate amp.. I'm selling 2 pairs of Bose 802s to fund the price of the new cabs.

Which drivers do they use in the Yamaha kit now ?

reputed to be designed from scratch by Nexo and then manufactured presumably by yamaha.

I'm pretty sure Yamaha still use Eminence drivers, like they did in older boxes such as Clubs. I think they also use Celestian for the HF in some of the current powered boxes that are very popular right now.

I suspect you still have to go through Yamaha to get the right part.

Also I second the suggestion above that adding a little sub to your existing speakers would be the most cost effective solution. There are several reasonable MI subs from RCF / dB Tech that also include a crossover, which makes things simpler than adding a rack unit.

so where does the 'designed by nexo' bit come in then? surely they wouldn't pass a nexo design to eminence to manufacture? or am I missing something?

I too would recommend the Yamaha DXR 15's and Yamaha has bought out Nexo to collaborate together in professional audio systems.

Yamaha have access to Nexo's design's and electronics software.

For me personally its a win win as most of our desks are Yamaha and PA's Nexo.

The DXR15's aren't really that heavy, I can comfortable lift one onto a speaker stand, they have more bottom end performance than any other powered 15 in the range, and we regularly use them for small DJ/Band gigs with no problems
