Allen & Heath dLive

Once upon a time, new digital mixer announcements were momentous occasions... now they're almost mundane...

However, I'm sure that this more up market offering is brilliant in every way! It even looks somewhat Digico like with the LED illumination along the top rail...

Looks like a very grown up GLD.

It appears to be similar channel display LCDs, soft-touch buttons and perhaps even the encoder knobs are similar to the GLD chrome?

If it works like the GLD it'll be even easier to navigate...

It may have some similarities in looks in the pictures but in the flesh its a different beast. Its built from the ground up on a new FPGA architecture.

Looking forward to fully showing this one off, its an amazing bit of kit.

Will drop a note when we will be showing it in the UK.

Yowsers, that does look like an absolutely phenomenal package from A&H. As a very happy iLive user, I'm much looking forward to seeing, feeling and hearing this puppy.

OK, first showing of this in the UK will be at the Pro Show on September 12th, From October onwards we will then be looking at bringing it to a number of locations throughout the UK.

That's what a forum is for, isn't it? ;)

Indeed. Thank you.

First, I'll tell you why I'm considering this system.

I do tons of fly-ins and "production supplied" shows and although I'm well versed on most consoles out there, I'd like to have my own that flies with me. So it has to be relatively lightweight and able to be taken as checked baggage. I was considering the X32 or M32 system but it has some major limitations, mostly in that there is no expansion available above 40 channels (32 really), and I often use more channels that that. I'd also like better quality if possible.

I think the only Pro/Semi-Pro "console in a rack" systems are the Behringer, Presonus and A&H AFAIK. Stuff like the Waves or SAC system aren't really contenders because of latency.

I'd like the ability for players to control their own mixes and to control the system with just a laptop, iPad or fader box, which the A&H looks perfect for. I like the ME-1 but the IP8 also looks very interesting!

So, my questions are:

1. How does it sound? My reference is DiGiCo and Midas Pro ATM. I can hear the difference easily between those boards and the Yamaha and Behringer products.

2. Any reports of software crashes? How buggy is the software currently?

3. How is the Scene system compared to the DiGiCo/Midas Pro? Is there a Preview Mode?

4. Does it really have unlimted PFL buses available? Can I assign a specific PFL bus to each player on an ME-1?

5. Can the ME-1 send it's output back to the DM rack so I can more easily use wireless IEMs in a rack by the DM?

6. Are the slots on the DM racks just for different digital I/O or can additional analog inputs/outputs be added without needing a DX32 rack?

That's it for today. Thanks for your help!

Hi

Are you based in the U.K.? If so drop me a line and we can maybe get you in front of one and if need be we could even bring one to a couple of your gigs and do a bit of hand holding if needed. Drop me an email gmaguire@audio-Technica.co.uk

Cheers

Gary
