Judge Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 We have a little video shoot in July and I shall need a couple of 575 HMIs. Is there anyone in The West that does them at a good rate? General prices seem to start at £60 per day plus VAT which is a bit startling.
david.elsbury Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Well... that sounds like film pricing rather than theatre pricing. usually charged at days out, and film "has more money than theatre" so ... ;)
Judge Posted May 21, 2015 Author Posted May 21, 2015 Yeah, true dat, but realistically a decent Arri unit does cost several thousand pounds to buy. But then again they can make a huge markup on the units as they are high cost low volume, and this is reflected in hire prices.I have seen a lot of Chinese Arri knockoff units on Ebay for around £600 - wonder what they are like?
david.elsbury Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Paulears has a bunch of knockoff lookalike Arri tungsten kit I think?
alistermorton Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Award for understatement of the week goes to Mark.
david.elsbury Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 No, sure! But I bet he's able to comment on the quality of the kit :)
p.k.roberts Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Going off topic a bit here, but I not sure I'd really want to risk using HMIs of unknown provenance, especially when 'known' kit can do this ........... http://www.bbc.co.uk/safety/resources/safetynews/whatsnew/hmi-burning-news
smalljoshua Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 How far westcountry are you? Stage Electrics are in Bristol which you'll likely go right past if you're anywhere past it! Josh

Who knew that could happen? Thats a long time to be standing on front of any light. Anyway, its outdoors - just use a reflector already. I may just rethink this. I just lit a show for the Beeb where I used 2k tungsten fresnels for audience keylight and it worked just fine. This room has natural light on two sides so the lights are just fills so naturally thought of HMI but could probably get away with 2ks with half CTB which would help our budget enormously.Josh, Stage LX are actually withing striking distance of me, so that is an option.
alistermorton Posted May 22, 2015 Posted May 22, 2015 Yikes! Who knew that could happen? The spill from discharge lamps has been known to cause "sunburn" for ages. A friend of mine commented in passing that after operating follow spot on a show run (using super troupers) she had what appeared to be sunburn on one side of her face. UV from the unfiltered spill around the dimmer and gate area.
