dan02liverpool Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Lighting a friends wedding in September and very limited on power, they want to use 40 watt squirrel cage lamps on stands and im just wondering how many can run off a 13 amp socket? ill be using Showtec Multidim MKII dimmers. thanks
alistermorton Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 13A socket can supply about 3kW That's about 75 40W lamps.
the kid Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Hope its cold as well, It's Gonna be toasty. FWIW 40w might be a touch bright for the "look" if there is lower watt you might be better off.
adam2 Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Yes, as others have posted, about 75 lamps each of 40 watts may be worked from a 13 amp supply. No great accuracy can be claimed as the manufacture of lamps is not that precise and we don't know if they are designed for 230 volts or for 240 volts, nor what the actual supply voltage will be. If the lamps are all turned on at the same time by a single switch there is a slight risk of blowing the plug fuse due to the inrush current. Bringing them up via dimmer, or turning them on in batches by several switches should be fine. If you need more than 75 lamps, then either look for 25 watt or 30 watt lamps, or consider LED equivalents.
Mazz Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Hi, I use these "Edison" style 40w lamps in festoons. They look fantastic, and the light quality is very similar to candlelight. But, they are no where near as bright as a 40w GLS lamp, and the filament, by its very nature, is delicate. Just a couple of things to keep in mind.
smalljoshua Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 On a slight tangent, where have people found is best to get these "fancy" lamps from for prices closer to sensible than hipster? Also, the fancy "oldschool" holders to go with them. I've googled (haven't we all) but a recommendation for a supplier to our industry instead of the "not on the shelf" exclusive websites for over £5 per lamp. If people want to hire me the holders, that'd work too. I'm after a few dozen (maybe 50) for an event, they'll need to run for about 10 days of 6 hour days. Josh
the kid Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Everywhere I have seen its 5-10 or even 15 a unit. The £15 ones are the giant super fancy ones. We did a show 2 christmasses ago and had to buy I think 25 of them + a bunch of rough service lamps, it was on the edge of them being popular, took for ever to find them and they were at least £10 a unit. I see amazon have some under decorative lightbulbs,
adam2 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 International Lamps have old style squirrel cage lamps for £4.95 each plus VAT. That is for a minimum order of 5 lamps, I suspect that a discount might be available for larger orders. They also have a selection of other vintage style lamps.
ImagineerTom Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 There are also some amazing LED based "fake" versions of these bulbs out there - check out "led filament bulb" at the usual asian sources to find long-life LED versions at the same sort of price as old-school filament. We've had a set on test for over a year now and haven't had any fail; they do also look incredibly deceptive.
musht Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 TLC have some http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Lighting_Menu_Index/Lamps_and_Tubes_Index/Antique_Range_Lamps/index.html Think they may be Crompton`s range http://www.cromptonlamps.com/cat1.asp?cat1=21
jono1 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 We used 120 of these at the start of the month on a project and got them via http://www.thelightbulb.co.uk/product/General-Purpose-Lamps-Bulbs/Carbon-Filaments/c-447 We got a good rate but the service was also good.
kgallen Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 On the LED side, could look at these (2W, 20W equiv, non-dim): http://www.screwfix....amp-bc-2w/9149f Very warm colour temperature, much like a 15W pygmy BC. We have some in bedside lights.
dan02liverpool Posted March 26, 2015 Author Posted March 26, 2015 I buy mine from harbord electrical www.harbordelectrical.co.uk/ about £7 each
