Mr.Si
HiI know there was a topic on speakers similar(ish?) to these, but for hi-fi. My need is for a different application and the speakers are different so I thought I'd start a different thread. I'm looking to buy some decent powered studio monitors (but not huge ones). Have been investigating the Dynaudio BM6A's and the Genelec 1031's Has anyone had experience with either of these, or better still, both? Which would people recommend? Main uses will be for monitoring 1. recordings of Rock and Jazz bands2. Contemporary Christian music with full band (also rock basis)3. Choral music4. Acoustic stuffmany of the above will probably be live recordings and location recordings i.e. anything but electronic music really. Ta, Si
Bobbsy
I've never used the Dynaudio so can't give a comparison, but I've used 1031A's extensively and have been very very happy with the sound...clean and accurate, capable of high SPLs without distortion, and not fatiguing at all when listened to over a long mix session. When installing them, you have to follow the Genelec instructions for locating the speakers and aiming them very precisely though. Finally, just to say, when using the 1031s I've always had the matching sub....by memory it's the 7070. Bob
dominicgross
We use the geni's (4 pairs) in our edit rooms at work: with great sucess. The dyn's are also very, very nice: very clean, low distortion: but they are a little bright with (IMHO) a slightly too extended low end. When you get these 2 brands, the only issues you will find will be possitioning. They are both 'pro' monitors, found in studios, so they should do the job! With powered monitors however: you will find they sound 'nicer' than alot of passive monitors (due to a presence lift) It's always a good idea to have a set of NS10's or something cheep and nasty to give you a second reference. Thanks<{POST_SNAPBACK}> In our case the Genelecs have always been wall mounted vertically...with a bracket that allows vertical and horizontal aiming as per the Gene instructions...the sweet spot really IS that critical... Mr.Si
Ok, to add another alternative to the equation, I am now taking out the Dynaudio's from the equation, and am getting prices for the 1031's and also the PMC TB2S's has anyone got views on the PMC's? I know they're more expensive, but that's cool with me. 0% finance sorts that issue out! :)
Mr.Si
Thanks for the advice my fellow technician friends. I got today, some Genelec 8040A's - they're very nice indeed... My mum complained about the noise travelling all the way through the house into the back room and our house has a big foot print. :P I didn't like the look of them at first, but they're a good design because they have grilles in front of the cones - protection for on the road - I tend to go to different locations rather than have a studio of my own, so it's a good feature to have. And they're rather much better than my Control 1's (though that's not too difficult). Cheers people. Mr. of the Si's
